A Successful Celebration of our Students!

Every year, we take a night to celebrate our members for their progress and achievement in reading during our afterschool program, as well as excelling in homework all year long.

More than 200 members and their families attended last week's Learning Center & Accelerated Reading Award Dinner, themed "The Magical World of Books - Opening the Doors to Your Imagination!" We enjoyed a night of awards, complete with special performances from Club members and an organ player, and a buffet dinner.

Our Learning Center staff recognized 25 Club members for the completion and accuracy of their homework, as well as overall effort (pictured above). They will also be treated to a celebration at Golden Corral!

Our Accelerated Reading staff and District Attorney Sandra Doorley recognized several categories of readers, including:
  • The top three Readers of the Year (congrats Aiden, Khalida, and Xavier!)
  • The Top Twelve Readers
  • Two Platinum Readers who scored the highest on their comprehension tests
  • The Fabulous Five most improved readers
  • The Star Readers who read more than 100 books each
  • 242 members who achieved their reading goals in one or more quarters

Over the past school year, 231 Club members read 15,764 books!

It was a wonderful night where Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester families, program donors, and volunteers came together to honor education and continue to empower youth to be successful.

Thank you again to everyone who made the night a success!
About our Accelerated Reading Program
The Need

The Rochester City School District (RCSD) is classified as a
high-need urban school district

In 2018, only 11% of RCSD students in grades 3-8 scored at the proficient level in English Language Arts, compared to 45% across New York State.

There are some schools in the southwest quadrant of the City  the location of the Club where entire buildings of students tested fell below the grade reading level.

These are the same kids that attend the Club and participate in our highly acclaimed literacy program.
Our Solution

The Club is one of the few afterschool providers that implements our specific literacy program in a non-school setting, It is designed to improve Club members’ reading levels at least 1.5 grade levels annually.

Using Renaissance Learning software, Club members take a test to determine their individual reading range. Members then read a book in their range every day, and take a comprehension test online using the software. If they pass, they’ll graduate to another book. After several books, we check their progress and adjust their range accordingly.

We have a proven track record with Accelerated Reading and will celebrate 15 years this year.
The Impact

In the 2018-19 school year, we saw:
231 active members in AR
15,764 books read
14,094 quizzes passed
82.7% comprehension rate
23 members read over 100 books each
114 students meet their reading goals for all four quarters

Not only do we see improvements in our members’ ability to read confidently, but we also see improvement in their academic success and a boost in their self-esteem.
