Fifth Sunday of Easter

Acts 17:16-28

How can you pray if you doubt?

As we continue our sermon series Head Full of Doubt, we’re going to talk about prayer this week, and how prayer from a place of doubt might differ from prayer that comes out of certainty.

In Acts 17, Paul comes across a community that has built an altar “to an unknown God.” I picture a shrine-like table full of flea market trinkets, good luck charms, and plastic Made-in-China icons to various deities. It’s like they don’t *quite* know which god is the right one, so they are covering all the bases, just in case. Paul commends them for having faith in… something. But he wants them to understand God in a different way. The God made known in Christ is not some far-off presence that needs to be made tangible by all this STUFF; but one in whom “we live and move and have our being.” This God is in us and with us, in all things.

The great existential question then is: “how are we to know?” We can’t see God. We can’t make God real by way of plastic charms or graven images. So what is that we are praying to? What is behind that veil of mystery, and how can we know when our prayers have landed somewhere?

Sometimes, when we don’t receive an answer right away, it may feel like our prayers are just words cast into the void. Maybe that’s why we human-types find so many other “idols” in which to place our faith. Money, guns, celebrities, our own success and awesomeness… Pick your poison, but we always manage to find a god that will answer us more quickly and tangibly than the God who cannot be seen.

Maybe it’s time we learned a better way. Come Sunday and we’ll work on that.

Peace,
Erin

Toy Swap in Children’s Sunday School
Sunday, April 29
We are learning to care for God’s creation! One way is to recycle or reuse things we no longer need or want, rather than throwing them away. Next Sunday we’ll have a toy swap during Sunday School. Each child may bring toys they would like to swap or give to charity. (no limit on how many they bring.) They will then be able to choose two “new” items to take home. Extra toys will be donated to Micah Ministries. Items should be brought to Room 202 before reporting to your classrooms.

Children’s Choir rehearsals are held every Sunday in Room 202 for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade, directed by Amy Diediker. Rehearsals will be 10:20 -10:40. We’re rehearsing for a performance in worship on May 13. See you Sunday!

U.S. refugee resettlements so far this fiscal year are VERY LOW.  Sharon Stanley-Rea from the Disciples Home Ministry shared in a recent newsletter:  “As we approach the "half year" for refugee resettlement in this fiscal year on March 31st...the U.S. has resettled less than 10,000 refugees (not even 20%) of our national 45,000 admissions goal for fiscal year 2018!  Already, this 45,000 annual goal is the LOWEST in our nation's resettlement history, at a time when there are over 22 million refugees worldwide.”
