Food Forum Inspires Action |
|
|
|
Over 900 people came to Fox Lane High School on Saturday March 4th to engage in everything about local food - how and why to grow or buy local as well as challenges and possible solutions to food waste, hunger in Westchester, and equitable access to fresh, healthy food in our community.
The interactive and exciting day included dynamic speakers, informative workshops, and engaging demonstrations. Keynote speakers (Mark Bittman, pictured left and Michel Nischan, pictured below) covered topics ranging from food and climate change, personal food choices that benefit both our health and the planet, and efforts to increase access to healthy fruit and vegetable purchases for low income residents. Panelists and speakers discussed topics ranging from resilient local food economies, budget-savvy shopping, rethinking food waste, and starting a backyard garden, sharing food with those in need to what's in the Farm Bill.

The lively expo allowed for great interaction with and among exhibitors and included local farms, hunger-relief organizations, garden experts, chefs, food-rescue organizations, sustainability organizations and live chickens!
It was an amazing day thanks to the great work of committee members, volunteers and Bedford 2020 supporters. Click here for photos from the event and see below for the list of sponsors.
After the event participants took a survey and many pledged to take at least one action to support what they learned at the Food Forum...

“I’m very interested in what Bedford 2020 is catalyzing today and I’m personally learning a lot about the dynamics in the county around food, farming and communities.”

Bedford 2020 will use the Food Forum's momentum to drive more action in our community around local food. Our Food and Agriculture Task Force will continue to work with Food Forum partners to promote more growing, buying, eating, and sharing of local food - and avoiding food waste!
