DELAND, FL – May 13, 2020 – The Museum of Art – DeLand has opened enrollment for its 7th annual Teacher Institute, “The Art of Reflection and Response.”
According to Pam Coffman, the Museum’s Curator of Education, “the Institute is especially appropriate for arts, language arts, reading, social studies/history, gifted, ESE and ESOL teachers.”
The 2020-21 Institute begins July 14 with an immersive 3-day seminar at the Museum. Saturday seminars follow on: September 12; October 10; December 5; January 23; and, February 6. All Saturday sessions are from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The Institute concludes with a celebration and recognition event on Thursday, April 1, 2021, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
The Institute is free to Volusia County public school teachers K-12, and includes a one-year Individual Museum Membership. Participants who successfully complete the program can earn up to 36 credits through Volusia County Schools and receive a professionally printed anthology highlighting course work that can be used in their professional development portfolios.
Coffman said the sessions are designed to help teachers “de-stress and discover a renewed enthusiasm to reconnect with your sense of personal creativity, passion and purpose as a teacher. In addition, participation in the Institute allows you to become part of a community of like-minded professionals.”
Applications and information can be found on the Museum website under the Learn heading and then Educators and Professional Development. Interested teachers can also contact Coffman directly at 386.734.4371 or coffman@MoArtDeland.org. Applicants should apply only if they commit to all of the Institute sessions as course work is hands–on and collaborative and missed sessions can’t be made-up.
Participation is limited to 20 teachers and the deadline for applications is Friday, June 12, 2020. This program is made possible by the support of Betty Dress Johnson and the Family of Evans C. Johnson.
