Remember in Prayer
For those who have no warm shelter from the cold of winter we pray for safe places to live, eat and sleep and that as faith communities we will work and advocate diligently to end homelessness.

From Pastor Gloria Dovre
I have been blessed in so many ways by the opportunity to serve for seven years as Assistant to the Bishop/Director for Evangelical Mission (DEM). The witness of so many people from across this synod, the reminder that every congregation makes a difference in the world, and the ways that I have been graciously welcomed into the life and ministry of local communities of faith has been humbling. As I take leave of this office, my heart is full and I give thanks to God.

Lately I have felt the pull to congregational ministry and to find the space and time to be creative in ways that celebrate the deep connection between art and faith. I look forward to serving the
good people of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ottumwa on a part-time basis and to pursuing a number of creative endeavors.

I find myself honored to have worked with such exceptional colleagues. I got to work with our partners at The Lutheran Center, in the Congregational and Synodical Mission Unit (CSM) and
with DEMs across the ELCA. If you are ever in Chicago, visit the Lutheran Center!  You will be inspired by the work we are doing – together.

AND I have taken delight working side-by-side with dear friends in our own Office of the Bishop. Thank you Michael, Eric, Paul, Kathy, Val, Lorraine and Lori for the faithful counsel and camaraderie in the holy encounters we have shared.

And thanks to all of you who continue to serve the needs around you. This church is a living breathing body, with exemplary leaders who teach us how to live and serve in Jesus name.

Synod Blog: Spotlight on Iowa
By Pastor Paul Ostrem
The eyes of the nation will be on Iowa on February 1 as folks gather for “the caucuses.” I long for the night when I can watch a little TV without viewing a political advertisement, and I am not naïve enough to think that will happen on February 2. But while we as Iowans have the national limelight, we would do well to take advantage of every opportunity to be involved in the political process especially as we move toward electing our next President. Involved not just so we know what candidate we will support, but involved in a way that lets the political parties know what is important to us as citizens. Continue reading...

Correction to instructions for 2014 (last year’s) W-2s.
Changes resulting from the Federal Affordable Health Care Act have been challenging for many organizations.

We recently became aware that instructions for completing employee’s 2014 W-2s included information that was incorrect.  On Portico’s website, and subsequently included in information sent to congregations, instructions stated that ‘the fair market value of health benefits paid by an employer for anyone in the health plan who is not a tax dependent as qualified by the IRS, must be included as wages for employment and income tax withholding purposes – if those family members are not considered tax dependents of the employee. If any of your employees have dependents with ELCA health benefits ask if the family members qualify as tax dependents.  If they don’t you will need to report the fair market value of health benefits for the dependents as additional taxable income for the employee.’  This information was incorrect.

Please contact your tax professional if you have questions or become aware that forms were completed incorrectly.  The synod center for ministry does not provide tax advice.  However, if you are aware of any W-2’s that were filed incorrectly as a result of this information, please contact Kathy Smith, Associate for Administration, at the synod office.  The company that provided the original information has offered to assist with expenses incurred as a result of the incorrect information.
