Superintendent Will H. Ector, Jr.
Protecting Public Education
Lately, parents have asked me how the country's new administration will change life at Berryessa Union School District. It is still early in the game to know which changes will be made to the Department of Education. I'd like to focus on what we can do to protect our public schools rather than focusing on fear-based theories.

First, we should be aware of how proposed changes may alter the funding of public schools and how vouchers and private charter schools may change that funding formula.
Second, I encourage our families to become involved with their child's school and district. Parent involvement is one the best predictors of a strong, healthy school and student success. There are many ways for parents to influence the local landscape of their child's education - District School Board Meetings, School Site Council, PTA, Citizens' Oversight Committees, and even, being a classroom volunteer. Our LCAP Stakeholder meeting on March 15th at 6 pm in the District Office is a great place to share your thoughts on our district as we develop the roadmap that sets the course for the district. We hope to see you soon!
Raising Confident, Creative, and Collaborative Students

Mark your calendars for BUSD's annual Parent University Conference on April 1, 2017, from 8:00 am to 12 noon at Summerdale Elementary School. In January, we surveyed our parent community to discover the parenting and education topics that interest them. Parents will be able to select a variety of workshops on topics such as communication and discipline, digital citizenship and cyber bullying, understanding Common Core Math, helping your child manage stress. We will provide childcare for children 4-11 years old.

BUSD Parent Education events are a wonderful opportunity to learn effective techniques that will make you a better parent by strengthening your relationship with your child. Parenting is a tough job and BUSD is here to be your village. We look forward to seeing you at this year's BUSD Parent University.

BUSD Cares
Positive Discipline Classes

BUSD hosted a Spanish-language five-session workshop series on Positive Discipline and Internet Safety. The series gave parents useful techniques to establish home routines and to create a consistent and positive discipline system. Parents learned how to set limits and teach their children to control their negative behaviors. Parents implemented the techniques they learned in the classes and reported positive results in their homes.
Valentines for Homeless Children

Piedmont Middle School sixth graders created Valentine's Day cards for Stand Up For Kids. The cards were added to lunches at an event for homeless youth.
BUSD Innovates
Mad Science Fire and Ice Assembly

Brooktree students in TK through 5th grade participated in the Mad Science Fire and Ice Assembly. Students loved participating in the demonstrations. The Assembly kicked off the Science Fair season and sparked lots of ideas on topics and following the scientific process.
Coolest Digestive System Science Experiment

Toyon Elementary School's Counseling Enriched SDC teacher, Mimi Park, taught her students an innovative and interactive experiment to learn about the entire process of the digestive system. Torn bread pieces replicate what happens to food when you chew, a measuring cup to represent your molars and how it smashes food, and then saliva represented by water to show the physical change of the bread.

After the physical change to the food, the students learn about chemical change to the food in the digestive system by adding vinegar to the experiment. The lesson progresses through all the other organs and ends with human waste. This experiment definitely received lots of "ewww, gross" comments and giggles.

BUSD Celebrates Lunar New Year

BUSD has a strong tradition of celebrating Lunar New Year. We were honored to have Assemblymember (and former BUSD Trustee) Kansen Chu, School Board President Thelma Boac, and Assistant Superintendent Joseph McCreary as special guests for Toyon Elementary School's 20th Anniversary of its Lunar New Year celebration, which is organized by former BUSD Trustee Linda Chen and Mandarin class teachers. Laneview Elementary School students wore traditional clothing and created handmade masks for their vibrant dragon parade.
Multicultural Night

At BUSD, we firmly believe that our district's diversity makes us stronger and sets the stage for our students to truly understand the phrase, "think global, act local." Our diversity provides our students first hand experiences to learn about the world's cultures and appreciate all the uniqueness of everyone's heritage and culture. We love these photos from Northwood Elementary School's Annual Multicultural Night hosted by Northwood's PTA.
BUSD Engages
