Program Update

While back to school looked quite a bit different this year, Friends/Mentors jumped right into supporting caregivers and youth's transition to remote learning. Friends have joined virtual classrooms, communicated with teachers and administrators to ensure program youth have the tools they need to navigate this challenging time. The Friends also spent early Fall participating in social distance bike rides, skateboarding, roller skating, picnicking, and playing games in the park. Seeing the smiles on our youth's faces in person has re-inspired our no matter what commitment. Communication using technology presents multiple challenges and the ability to engage in social distance outings is refreshing and inspiring. We know that we will pivot in and out of in-person outings as the pandemic continues to cause rising infection rates. With this in mind, we consistently remind each other that Friends of the Children's commitment to youth is a long marathon of 12 + years. We embrace the marathon and pause when we feel we need to sprint.

Stories with Friends:
A Halloween Treat
A new twist on Halloween, our most senior Friend and mentor Joe took it upon himself to do something special and fun for all his youth, "Reverse trick or treating," is a fun new way to celebrate Halloween. The adult goes door to door dressed up as something fun and drops off a bag of goodies for the kids. Joe took it upon himself to find a way during this challenging time to spread joy. He remembers how fun it was when he was a child to dress up and celebrate Halloween and now the youth he serves get to create similar fond memories. The idea caught on and many of the other mentors here in Central Oregon have been spotted dressed up in a fun costume delivering goodies door to door.

Community Spotlight
We are beyond humbled that the team at Hayden Homes purchased shoes for all of our youth and their siblings. Each child received a pair of athletic shoes and a pair of winter shoes, both vital for our youth to feel a sense of belonging with their peers. This gift also supports program youth to engage in an active lifestyle. Thank you Hayden Homes!
