This Week at Sunday School: The Beatitudes
We learned that Jesus was a teacher who had many students. In one of Jesus’ most famous lessons, he taught us that we are all blessed, especially the meek and lowly among us. The other people Jesus said were especially blessed were the hungry and thirsty, the mourning, and those who are sad, or poor in spirit. When Jesus told this lesson, he took his students up on top of a mountain. In Jesus’ time, being up on a mountain meant being closer to God. Jesus was teaching that God’s love is for everyone, especially the weak or small. How do we know that God loves us? Where do we go when we want to be closer to God? How can we help share the good news that even when we’re sad or mourning, that we are especially blessed?

Youth Group: Ski/Snowboard Retreat
Our first ever Youth Group Ski/Snowboard Weekend Retreat is a go for next weekend, February 3-5! We currently have 5 people planning to go. If you'd like to join or learn more, contact me at 805-390-1021 or kevin@adventnyc.org

  • Location: We will ski/snowboard at Windham Mountain about 2 hours upstate. Visit their website here. We will stay at the house of Advent members Dart Westphal and Ellen Pollan in Windham Mountain Village on Friday night, and do a lock-in at their upstate Lutheran church in Oak Hill on Saturday night.
  • Itinerary: Leave Advent Friday afternoon. 2hr 15min drive upstate. Stay at Dart and Ellen's place in Windham Mountain Village (within walking distance to the ski lifts) Friday night. Ski and snowboard all day Saturday. Evening programming and lock-in at the Lutheran church in Oak Hill. Worship Sunday morning, grab lunch, and head back to Advent. Expected return around 3pm.
  • Estimated cost: Lift ticket is $73 and ski/snowboard rental with all safety gear is $45. (That's the rental price at Windham Mountain. We may be able to find a better price in town.) You'll need to budget a small amount (less than $50) for food, but it's likely some meals will be provided by Dart and the church too. Some in our group are considering Windham's bundled lower mountain lift ticket, rental, and lesson detailed here.
  • Who's this for? Advent's Youth Group, consisting of any high school youth and our youth who have been confirmed but are still in 8th grade. Friends from school are also welcome to join us on this trip! I will just need to have a medical release form on file for every person who attends. We have a simple online form that's quick to fill out.

Youth Night
Because of the Ski/Snowboard Retreat, our next Youth Night is previously scheduled for Sunday, February 5 will move back one weekend to Sunday, February 12. We'll meet from 6-8pm in the Youth Room (next to the kitchen) at Advent for food, fellowship, and discussion.
Special Youth Group Event in March
We're partnering with Pinecrest, a Lutheran youth ministry program encompassing the whole New York metro area, to offer a special youth event on Friday, March 3 from 7pm to 9:30pm here at Advent.

At the event, leaders from Pinecrest will lead mixers, games, and a Refugee Simulation activity they've developed just for teens, which I hope will be as engaging as it is timely. Pinecrest will also reach out to their own network of high school youth to join us, and provide information about their awesome program and summer camp. Please keep this on your calendars. Hopefully many can come!
Confirmation Dinner
Confirmation families,

Our next Confirmation Dinner is next Friday, February 3 from 6-9pm at the home of Hannah Lathen, located at 670 West End Avenue #11F, New York, NY 10025. We're looking forward a meal and time of learning together.
