Dear friends,
June 15 marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It's a date that has been set aside to bring international attention to the issue of elder abuse. There are more than 3 million victims of elder abuse in the United States every year and yet there are only 20 shelters for these victims across the nation. At the Jewish Home Family we are proud to provide SeniorHaven Center for Elder Abuse Prevention which provides both emergency shelter to victims of elder abuse and training to both the professional and lay communities. We have cared for a number of victims this past year, victims who have been physically abused and financially exploited, victims who have been so afraid of their family members that they would not even return to their home with the police to try and reclaim their possessions, victims who have been held prisoner by people claiming to help them while stealing their funds and their freedom. It is a privilege for us to be able to do this work and to carry this message. This week we were able to educate our peers at our Leading Age New Jersey conference and participate in the State's annual conference on this topic (click here for video). Want to learn more? Belong to a group or organization that would like a program on this topic? Just let us know and we'd be happy to help.
We're looking forward to next week's special program by American Ninja Warrior Jimmy Choi. Diagnosed in his late 20's with Parkinson's disease, Jimmy has not let that stop him. His inspirational story will be shared with all of us on Wednesday evening June 19 at Englewood Hospital Medical Center. Refreshments and informational displays will be offered from 6-6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Like to join us? At the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, we began our week celebrating Shavuot. Sunday morning services were led by Rabbi Feld followed by an afternoon social gathering and discussion. Monday's Culinary Club featured Avi Feld and some delicious cheesecake in honor of the holiday. On Wednesday we enjoyed a beautiful day with both "fun in the sun" programming and an outdoor barbecue. Barbecue days are always such a hit, from hot dogs to watermelon! Residents also enjoyed a great session on the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. We took a virtual tour and talked about our favorite players, past and present. We also kicked off the Lenora Messer Concert Series which was held on the patio and featured a favorite performer, Peter Pix. We also began the LaughActive program with fifteen residents. We did a comprehensive class which consists of warm up exercises, strength and balance training and a cool down, all of which incorporate posture and proper breathing. We got great feedback on this new program.

Jewish Home Assisted Living residents began the week with Shavuot services with Rabbi Korenblit. Rabbi Korenblit also led an afternoon discussion on "Mount Everest and Mount Sinai." Monday morning's services were followed by Kiddush and an afternoon program on "Jewish Heroes and Shavuot." On Tuesday we had trainer Patrick back for fitness and a great weight training class. We also took an outing of residents for lunch at Charlie Brown's, which was a popular request. And we ended the day with a festive Happy Hour on the back patio. Wednesday included a shopping trip to Walmart as well as music appreciation, Opening Minds through Art on Memory Lane, the monthly birthday program and a lecture on P.T.Barnum. Thursday included a program focused on elder abuse awareness and a visit from River Vale Police Detective Martin on "Senior Scams." Residents also enjoyed a lecture on Dean Martin and Rabbi Korenblit led a discussion on "Audrey Hepburn, Teenage Spy." The week concluded with a visit from Professor Ian Drake, whose lectures always draw a big crowd.
On Monday at the Gallen Day Center we celebrated "Carnival Day" with games, prizes, cotton candy, cheesecake and more!

On Tuesday we held another session of our specialized Parkinson's program and spent some time outside exercising in the lovely weather. On Wednesday we enjoyed "sweet sensations" on the patio, using fruit for sensory stimulation and in the afternoon had both a presentation on the Catskills and a session of Reiki healing. Thursday featured a visit from the dietitian and a discussion on the "food brain" connection and in the afternoon the participants laughed their way through a session of our Comedy Club. Rounding out the week was our Friday Father's Day celebration featuring bagels and lox along with live entertainment. ![]() Carol Silver Elliott
Volunteer Opportunity of the Week
Let’s go outside! We are looking for volunteers to take our residents outside on our beautiful patio on a once-a-week basis. Just imagine, 30 minutes of your time can change the life of a resident for the better! Fresh air and friendly conversation are just what the doctor ordered!
Please contact Stacey Orden, Director of Volunteer Services at sorden@jewishhomefamily.org or 201-518-1175 with questions or to sign up.
