![]() Urge Senators Rice, Gill, and Doherty to stop blocking Governor Murphy's nominees to the Highlands Council! The New Jersey Highlands is one of the state's most important resources providing drinking water to 6.2 million residents – that's 70% of the population! However, the agency charged with guiding development in the region and protecting its critical resources is still obstructed by pro-development members appointed by Governor Christie. Until these Council members are replaced, the Highlands Council is prevented from fully implementing the Highlands Act, denying incompatible development proposals that threaten Highlands resources and updating the Highlands Regional Master Plan in a way that meaningfully prepares for climate change!
Governor Murphy's nominations are key to enabling the Highlands Council return to its innovative planning mission of balancing growth with natural and cultural resource protection so that New Jersey can continue to benefit from the region's resources for generations to come. At this time Governor Murphy's two remaining nominees to the Council have been blocked by three senators who are playing political games, and delaying these candidates appointment! The wrong representation on the Highlands Council puts the region and our drinking water at great risk. The New Jersey Highlands Coalition We represent a diverse network of organizations - small and large, local, regional, statewide and national - and individuals with the common goal to protect, enhance and restore the New Jersey Highlands and to preserve the quality and quantity of drinking water for the 6.2 million people who depend on Highlands water.
