“ZWPA” Wraps Up Successful Season
Zero Waste Pennsylvania recently concluded its most successful event season ever – reporting an 82% combined diversion rate for all audited events. ZWPA’s events ranged from large, fully-staffed festivals such as the Pittsburgh Marathon and Three Rivers Arts Festival to smaller community events such as the Colfax Carnival.

Diverted waste was composted, recycled or even repurposed or reused. ZWPA audits the waste from an event before using the EPA's WARM Model to calculate energy savings and greenhouse gas reduction resulting from the amount of waste diverted.

"Recycling and composting significantly reduce energy use as well as greenhouse gas emissions," according to Ross Hirschfeld, Senior Zero Waste Specialist. "ZWPA’s efforts in 2016 have reduced a year’s worth of emissions from 15 cars!”
Scenic America Honors Ruth Becker
Congratulations to PRC’s first Executive Director, Ruth Becker, who received one of three Scenic America "Founders Awards" in October.  In 1981, Ms. Becker offered to house the Coalition for Scenic Beauty’s first office inside PRC's headquarters, which she did for three years.

Upon accepting the award she said: "As I look out around this room, I am so filled with hope for the future. To quote William James: 'Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.'"
Volunteers Needed for Rain Garden Project in Spring
Numerous rain gardens built this year throughout Delaware County have brought together neighbors to support Green Stormwater Infrastructures. These vital gardens both big and small – reduce runoff and help filter thousands of gallons of rainwater annually through the natural filtration process.
The next phase of garden building begins in spring 2017 and PRC needs volunteers.  For program updates, upcoming installation dates and volunteer opportunities, contact Jayne Young at
Learn How to Compost at PRC Workshops
School is officially back in session and so are PRC’s workshops! Compost indoors using red wiggler worms: Vermicomposting Workshops explain how to use worms to turn food scraps into a valuable soil amendment.  Not a worm fan?  Attend a Backyard Composting Workshop to learn how to set up and maintain a compost pile and ways to use your finished compost. Both class types are 90 minutes and include ready-to-go composting systems.

Saving Energy at Home
This Winter
These simple tips can have a big impact on energy consumption:

1. Take Advantage of Heat from the Sun
Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home, and close the curtains at night to reduce the chill.

2. Find and Seal Leaks
Seal air leaks around utility cut-throughs for pipes, gaps around chimneys, recessed lights in insulated ceilings and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets.

3. Lower Holiday Lighting Costs
Use light-emitting diode — or "LED" — holiday light strings to reduce the cost of decorating your home.
