A Reflection on Camp

Home, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, is “the social unit formed by a family living together.” Here at Gravatt, you will find your family, and you will find your home. I have never experienced a setting with more love, encouragement, and support than I have at this place.

Camp Gravatt has brought people of different backgrounds, ages, and cultures to create bonds with one another in a truly remarkable way. I am a firm believer in the statement that no other place on earth can have a power like a summer camp has. No other location on earth can have such an intense radiation of pureness, happiness, and love. No other place can be Gravatt.

This camp has it all: goats, a blob, but most importantly, the people. The people at Gravatt are the people who make Gravatt what it is today. Dating back to the beginning of the camp, to the very second you are reading this, people have always cared and loved this place with their entire being. Whether it be through energetic campers or dedicated staffers, we are what makes this place our place.

Earlier in the summer, Fletcher Spigner, previous camp director and current board member, talked to the camp staff about the importance of Gravatt, from the beginning of camp to now. He compared this place under the pines to an autonomous community in northern Spain, known as the Basque Country. In this region, they have the saying: “we are because we were.” This is mirrored in our community here at Gravatt. The reason we are known as the best summer camp is because we have always been the best summer camp. We have always had the best people working with our campers. We have always shown kindness and compassion to anyone who enters on that old dirt road. We are because we were.

Every day, I get to witness strangers become friends, and friends become family. This camp has become a home for so many, and I am so lucky to know that I have the privilege to be a part of the best home in the world.

Meet Kara!
Hello Gravatt Family!
Please allow me to introduce myself: my name is Kara Dye, and I’m thrilled to begin my service to Gravatt this month as Director of Marketing and Development! I grew up in the CSRA area, and my husband, Parker, and I are delighted to return and join this incredible community. As a former camp counselor myself, outdoor ministry holds a special place in my heart. God certainly made use of His canvas at Gravatt, and I’m honored to begin sharing the stories of all those who enter this “place in the woods.” I look forward to meeting each and every one of you!
Peace in Christ,
Kara Dye
