The 33rd annual Mission Federal ArtWalk returns to Little Italy April 29 and 30.  Each year, the festival attracts more than 100,000 art lovers.  Artists receive the benefit of a high-profile marketing campaign, a show-provided festival tent, and a huge audience for showcasing your work. The event website provides a page for every participating artist that presents your work to collectors for a full year.  The show website has been credited for many thousands of dollars of artwork sold following the events.  Apply today online.
 
 
 
 
 
Art Students & Emerging Artists: Apply Now for The Business of Art Scholarship

The Studio Door and Mission Federal ArtWalk together with San Diego Visual Arts Network are pleased to offer "The Business of Art" scholarship for the 33rd Annual Mission Federal ArtWalk.

The Business of Art scholarship is a unique opportunity for a student/emerging artist who has never shown and sold their work and who has a body of work to showcase at Mission Federal ArtWalk. The scholarship winner will receive a booth at the festival, and personalized mentoring from Patric Stillman, artist and owner of The Studio Door. The recipient also benefits from a media package provided by San Diego Visual Arts Network.

The San Diego Museum of Art presents Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture through January 31, 2017. This exhibit is the first retrospective of Louis Kahn's work in two decades, presenting over 200 objects related to Kahn's selected buildings and projects in the form of architectural models, plans, original drawings, photographs, films and more.

With complex spatial compositions and a mastery of light, Louis Kahn's architecture is regarded as a touchstone of 20th century modernism. Dignified, beautiful, and imbued with a powerful universal symbolism, Kahn's designs remain a testament to his belief that architecture should be monumental and spiritually inspiring.

Mingei International Museum

The Mingei International Museum presents the performance Memories in Watercolor by Camarada, Sunday, January 15th, 2017. In China, watercolor painting has been a dominant art form since ancient times. Watercolors can be magically translucent and luminous. In Memories in Watercolors, the versatile players of Camarada will employ pure, shimmering tones of the flute, cascading piano rivulets, and a wide range of string quartet sonorities, from delicate to wild, revealing a kindred musical essence in the works of Tan Dun, Yuko Uebayashi, Chen Yi, Bright Sheng, and Maurice Ravel.

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Downtown

In collaboration with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art (SDAAMFA), the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego presents Dimensions of Black, an exhibition of works by African American artists drawn from the Museum’s own holdings. SDAAMFA is committed to educating residents and visitors of San Diego about the history and artistic contributions of African American culture through exhibitions and interpretive programs.

This mission finds resonance in MCASD’s own collection, which includes numerous works by leading African American artists of our time. The collaboration will also present a series of accompanying programs throughout the exhibition. With over 30 pieces from the 1960s to today, the exhibition traverses crucial interests and perspectives that have shaped the art of our time.

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla will close its doors beginning January 3, 2017 to prepare for a renovation and expansion of the La Jolla facility. The building will close, but their presence in the community will continue with many cultural partnerships, including this exciting new program series at The LOT. MCASD is partnering with the luxury cinema and dining venue to present An Artist’s Perspective. This casual and engaging lecture series will feature acclaimed artists from around the region. The first event in this series will feature Los Angeles-based artist Kori Newkirk on January 17th at 6PM.

The La Jolla Athenaeum 

In honor of San Diego Book Arts’ 20th anniversary, the Athenaeum is pleased to exhibit Over the Moon, a collaborative art project organized and created by 40 artist participants from San Diego Book Arts. The project is inspired by a series haiku poems contributed by the SDBA’s artist in residence, Diane Gage.

The book artists have not only created their original artwork on paper, but also made individual hand bound art books based on high-quality reproductions of the originals. The project showcases SDBA as a whole while highlighting the unique contributions of each individual artist.

The Oceanside Museum of Art presents Trinh Mai: Lifeline, through March 5th, 2017. Trinh Mai is an interdisciplinary artist based in Orange County with strong ties to San Diego whose work is driven by innovative narratives of storytelling.

Her work in charcoal, gouache, mixed media, and stitching re-imagines personal memories, family roots, and spiritual connections, altering conceptions of our identities and shared histories. These works are intimate, emotional, uplifting, and hopeful. For Mai, the interlacing moments of our lives create a cord, a meandering thread that strings together the details that provide the experience needed for us to survive and thrive.

San Diego Repertory Theatre 

The San Diego Repertory Theatre presents Our Great Tchaikovsky, January 12th through February 12th, on the Lyceum Stage. Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is Russia’s most famous composer and one of the greatest composers of all time. His work extends from beautiful lilting melodies for ballets Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker; to the eternally popular and celebratory 1812 Overture and Marche Slav. 

The extraordinary musical talent Hershey Felder will take the audience on a brand new journey from Putin’s Russia, where Tchaikovsky is a hero, back in time to Czarist Russia, where that was not entirely the case. Our Great Tchaikovsky is a world premiere time-bending story of culture and politics that explores the mystery around some of the greatest music ever composed.
