Remember in Prayer
As John the Baptist was fearless and persistent in proclaiming the coming Messiah, we pray that we, too, may be eager and bold in our witness of the good news with our family, friends, neighbors and coworkers.

CTIM on hiatus
Called Together in Mission (CTIM) is an event with a long and rich history in the life of the Southeastern Iowa Synod. Providing resources for congregations and leaders throughout the synod, this annual gathering has typically been held in early March.

CTIM will not be held in 2016. We are thinking of this as something of a “sabbatical” for the event - an intentional break in order to reassess goals while renewing our approach to providing resources to and for one another. As life throughout the church continues to evolve, we are determined to be responsive in ways that best serve congregations as we live out God’s mission together, in the name of Jesus.

As we take this break, we give thanks to the people of First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids for so graciously hosting us throughout the years. Stay tuned for what comes next.

Bishop Eaton issues letter to Muslim-American community
In a Dec. 11 letter to the Muslim-American community, the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the ELCA, said, "I am writing on behalf of many Christians in this country who wish to share a word of solidarity, love and hope with you in these difficult days."

"In our love for you, our Muslim neighbors, we are distressed by the ways in which you are being forced to bear the fears held by many in our nation," Eaton wrote. "Therefore, we renew our commitment to find even more effective ways to protect and defend you from words and actions that assault your safety and well-being. We believe God calls us to resist what is divisive, discriminatory, xenophobic, racist or violent, and we want you to look to us as allies and friends."

The full text of the letter follows:

"Grace and peace to you. I am writing on behalf of many Christians in this country who wish to share a word of solidarity, love and hope with you in these difficult days.

"In this season of Advent, we, your Christian neighbors, are preparing to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who commanded that "you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart … [and] you shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:30-31, NRSV). Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
January 18-25, 2016
Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17:21). All over the world, hearts are touched and Christians come together in worship to pray for their unity. Now is the time to plan an ecumenical worship service in your community. Download materials at the World Council of Churches’ website.
