Worship 8:30am & 10:45am
Education 9:30am
Twenty-seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Give thanks in all things.

I give thanks for many things this week. I give thanks for the many hands and the labor of love that made for such a wonderful church potluck last Sunday! Anita and the Church Life team outdid themselves this year-- and it literally takes a village to get all that food on the table. I’m grateful for the offerings that each of you brought, and for the generosity and support you have have expressed with your pledge cards so far.

I give thanks for dedicated leaders who are committed to the mission of Saint Andrew, who show up for evening and weekend meetings, and who give the very best of their time and treasure to make this place what it is. I’m thankful for our beautiful worship space, and the spirit that meets us here whenever we’re together. And I give thanks for the voice this congregation has established in the wider community—that we are known around town as “that church” where all are welcome.

I also give thanks for a pause. For some breathing room, and one of those rare Sundays on the calendar that falls between Thanksgiving and the beginning of Advent. We don’t get that Sunday every year, often having to jump right into the greenery and the “O Come, Emmanuel” as soon as the turkey leftovers are put away. But this year—we get a bonus day.

What will we do with it?

As for me, I’m going to Kentucky to spend time with family over Thanksgiving—something we rarely get to do without having to rush back for the first Sunday of Advent! I know many of you are traveling as well. But if you will be in the vicinity, you don’t want to miss Sunday. Our guest preacher, Dr. Delesslyn Kennebrew, is going to knock your socks off.

Dr. Kennebrew was recently called to serve our Greater Kansas City region as Associate Regional Minister. Mark Harmon served on the search committee that called her, so I will let him properly introduce her on Sunday. She’ll be preaching on Thessalonians 5:18, and what it means to give thanks in all things. I give thanks for her strong voice, her faithful vision, and her willingness to share a good word with us before the holiday season kicks into full swing.

Meanwhile, know that I’m giving thanks for you, every day, and praying that you and your loved ones have a day to pause, to breathe, and to be grateful for all the good gifts in your life. Enjoy the bonus Sunday—and enjoy it together.
