Prayers for the Entertainment Industry
Dear HPN friends,

Thank you for joining us in prayer for Hollywood this week. We have recently lost two Hollywood icons, and we want to honor them and ask for your prayers for their families, friends and fans. Doris Day, who "remains one of the most successful female movie stars of all time," died on Monday at the age of 97. And Tim Conway, the star of The Carol Burnett Show, died on Tuesday at the age of 85. HPN thanks them for their heartfelt, joyful spirits and their contributions to our nation's entertainment.

As many of our U.S.A. members might know, the month of May brings the National Day of Prayer. This year, HPN and 9t5 Marketplace Ministries co-hosted an incredible evening of worship, fellowship, and prayer led by our partner ministry leaders. Over 100 industry professionals gathered at L.A. Castle Studios, a production studio owned by friends of HPN, and it was a wonderful opportunity for our community to pray with and for one another. We're so grateful for these loving creative professionals, and we know that God is doing amazing work through each of them every day in Hollywood!
Church supporting Hollywood ministries

We praise God for the rich history of vision and support for entertainment professionals through the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood – the very church that HPN was birthed out of 18 years ago and continues to be hosted by today. A plaque was presented to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, commemorating the church's entertainment ministry, beginning in 1949 by Henrietta Mears and attended by Dale and Roy. The plaque was presented on May 24th, 1993 on the campus of this church, which continues to this day to support entertainment ministries and professionals in Hollywood.
VR Church

We want to celebrate what God is doing through the growing VR Church, led by HPN member D.J. Soto. Pastor D.J. is reaching people through his VR church who would never otherwise enter a church, and we are thankful that he is using technology to change lives for Jesus!
Naomi Scott's faith

Let's praise God for Naomi Scott, who plays Jasmine in the live-action Aladdin movie, and her openly sharing about her faith as a creative professional. She is also a former worship leader, and says that there is "a connection between my faith, and realizing that music can have a soul and purpose, which has ultimately affected the way I approach the art." Let's praise God for Naomi Scott's faith and pray for her continued confidence in demonstrating and sharing her relationship with God in everything she does.
Pray for working mothers in Hollywood

Since we just celebrated Mother's Day, let's pray today for the working moms in Hollywood. It's still a male-dominated business and many moms are very stressed with balancing raising children and working incredibly long, demanding hours. This article says: "For women in entertainment — an industry where the hours are grueling and unpredictable and travel to faraway locations is the norm — the conflict between work and family can be brutal. While executives at places like Netflix get generous paid leave and many studios have on-lot childcare centers, Hollywood is powered by an army of freelance artists and crew members who do not have reliable access to such perks."
New MPAA film ratings chief

Please pray for Kelly McMahon, the MPAA's new film ratings chief, who is taking over the national film ratings board – a job that has been described as "one of the thorniest and least-understood jobs in Hollywood." As a young mother of an 8-year-old boy, Kelly wants to make some changes and redefinitions to our film ratings. We ask that you join us in praying for her to gain wisdom, discernment and an understanding of what's best for the movie-going public, as she seeks advice from others along the way.
Pray for new systems at CBS

CBS is instituting new procedures to address the issue of sexual harassment, including adding on-set human resources staff for all of its shows. Let's pray that the new systems are effective in keeping the work environment safe and comfortable. Pray also for the human resources representatives to build positive and trusting relationships with staff, casts, and crews.
Christians in the mainstream film industry

Steph Curry co-founded Unanimous Media "with the goal of telling powerful faith stories, honestly, because life is hard...but through these moments there is also a God who by nature cannot abandon you." Pray for everyone involved in creating this production company's diverse projects, and for more Christians to have the opportunity to make films in the mainstream industry – like their upcoming film Emanuel. Pray for the impact of films that are about love, healing, hope and faith – though not necessarily "faith-based" – and the potential they have to demonstrate Jesus to the world.
Thanks so much for joining us in prayer this week! An HPN member here in Hollywood has also asked that we pray for Caleb, a young boy in our community who has just been diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer. Please pray with us for Caleb and his parents to be immersed in God's overwhelming love and peace, and for Caleb's doctors to be filled with wisdom and incredible care and healing for him.

We're so grateful for all of you! Enjoy the rest of your month.

With love,
Karen, Erin, Virginia, and Kim

"Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot."
Charlie Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin returned to the United States for the first time in over a decade, to accept his honorary Oscar in 1972. He received a 12-minute long standing ovation, the longest in Oscar history.
"A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth. It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart. Frustration is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart."

HPN's newest YouVersion devotional on FELLOWSHIP is now available. Fellowship is not just being a part of a great group of loving friends; it's experiencing the grace of God, the love of Jesus, the intimacy of the Holy Spirit, and being a part of others' salvation. This week we focus on the extraordinary power of living in fellowship with God and with others and how it can change our lives and the lives of people all around us.
