Dear friends,
It was exciting to have our final vaccine clinic at Jewish Home Assisted Living last Saturday. We finished up the vaccines for our elders and a number of our staff. We also completed immunizing more than 80 of our Essential Caregivers. While vaccines are not the whole answer and the limits of visiting still apply, we see this as a huge step forward. We are also happy to report that both the Jewish Home at Rockleigh and Jewish Home Assisted Living are no longer in outbreak status. That means we have not had a positive test result, elders or staff, in more than 28 days. Again, this does not change the current State restrictions but it does prepare us to more fully open our doors when the moment arises.
We celebrated the end of outbreak at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh this week. Our incredibly creative Recreation staff found some “COVID piñatas,” shaped like the coronavirus image we have all seen so many times. They filled those piñatas with candy and hung them on all four of our resident care units. On Monday afternoon a number of us visited all the units. Music was playing and there were elders and staff gathered. We took long poles and had a chance to take a swing at that piñata, taking a swing at COVID! Everyone from elders to staff participated and everyone was laughing and cheering. Eventually candy rained down and was a wonderful treat for all.

At Jewish Home Assisted Living this week we began on Sunday with a great program on Samson and Delilah, followed by Rabbi Korenblit’s article of the week. The afternoon opera was “Manon” and Rabbi Korenblit led a discussion entitled “700 Years before Coronavirus—Jewish Life During the Black Death Plague.” Our evening feature film was “Made in Italy.” Monday began with a favorite program, current events via Zoom with volunteer Beth Shiffman. We had an exercise class and then an afternoon concert featuring Andre Rieu. We began our Tuesday with a lively headlines discussion regarding the controversy about Dr. Seuss. Movement to the music, games on our iN2L unit were followed by a documentary on the DC-3 airplane, a concert “Violins and Hope” from the Cleveland Orchestra and wrapped up the day with yoga and the film “Radium.” Wednesday included headlines from the New York Times, a delightful trip to Cyprus, Men’s Club, a fun game of Password and Happy Hour. We began Thursday with headline news, Zoom exercise with Patrick, a lecture on Nat King Cole as well as a documentary on Marco Polo and a tour of the Metropolitan Opera. We wrapped up the week with Yiddish with Rabbi Korenblit, a lecture on former first lady Laura Bush and Dean Martin “Live from London.”
We began our week at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh with Sunday morning’s stretch along with “Wake up to Music.” The Afternoon of Music featured “Name that Tune” with film and Broadway music featured. Monday included interactive current events, Karaoke Time, music trivia and Faith Formation. Dancercise and cardio drumming got everyone moving including some of the staff! Fun and games, music and movement. Brain Teasers, Russian Club and musical rehearsal. We also had fun with Painting with a Twist making bouquets of flowers with a variety of materials while we snacked on cheese, crackers and sparkling grape juice! We took a lovely reminiscence walk during memory lane on Wednesday followed by chair yoga with soft music. In recognition of National Anthem Day we had a lively discussion about the history of “The Star Spangled Banner” and then we all sang it together. We also had fun with Steady Boxing, Rabbi’s Forum, cardio drumming and a sing-a-long. Because March is Women’s History month, we had a great Jewish Home University program on “Women in Baseball” and followed up with a screening of “A League of Their Own.” We also had concierge cart, fun with fitness, games on the iN2L and “Making the Band.” In honor of Humor Day, we had some fun and laughter and we also had a session of our photography club. We finished the week on Friday with a special program on color, noting that March is also Color Therapy month. Rabbi Feld led a discussion on the 25th anniversary of Shabbat Across America, connecting Jewish people across North America, with more than a million people participating over its history. We also enjoyed Tai Chi, Men’s and Women’s Clubs, Comedy Central, Bingo and Trivial Pursuit.
