Who is a Lutheran?
Lutherans sing A Mighty Fortress a capella in Swahili and know it by heart in Tanzania. Lutherans stand up to injustice and violence through community, art, and hope in El Salvador. Lutherans in New York City feed the hungry in their community, advocate for immigrants, and learn through conversation and service. Across the world, Lutherans meet at the Communion table, open to all, and experience God's love.

Our Tanzania Committee at Advent strengthens our accompaniment with the Lutheran Church in Tanzania, the fastest growing Lutheran Church in the world. Since forming 6 months ago, the committee has worked to establish a relationship with our new sister congregation, Nyabugera Lutheran Parish.

Our companionship with Nyabugera Parish is rooted in the practice of accompaniment, and the belief that we have as much to learn from Tanzanian Lutherans as we have to share. They are our 2nd sister church, building on years of joyful accompaniment with Pueblo de Dios Lutheran Church in El Salvador.

This new companionship expands the connectedness and insight we gain from Lutheran witness around the world.

The Tanzania Committee is brainstorming ways for our congregants and Sunday School kids to interact with the adults and children of Nyabugera Lutheran Parish. They're laying the groundwork for an Advent trip to Tanzania in 2020. And they are planning a very special Sunday on November 18 to lift up our walk with Tanzanian Lutherans.
Udugu Sunday | November 18, 2018
Udugu means "companionship" in Swahili. The word expresses equality, mutual support, and a commitment to walking together. In this spirit we will lift up our new sister church in Tanzania, and reflect on our stewardship through the ministry of Advent and the global Lutheran Church.

Worship | 9am & 11am in English, 12:30pm in Spanish

Get ready for Tanzanian-style worship! Spoiler: It includes a lot of Lutheran hymns. Tanzanian Lutherans are Lutherans, and sing from the same hymnal we do, translated into their own language, Swahili.

One unique element of Tanzanian worship we'll do is an offering of food for the community. Bring non-perishables with you to worship to participate in this offering. Also, Pastor Margay Whitlock, an Advent member who happens to also be a pastor, will preach about her own experience in Tanzania in August.

Learn about our new Sister Congregation | 10-11am

Learn more about our new sister church in Tanzania from members of our Tanzania Committee. The presentation and discussion will take place downstairs, in the back half of the Community Hall.

Multicultural Thanksgiving Meal | 12pm

To close the day, join us for a multicultural Thanksgiving Meal with our whole community, including cuisine from Tanzania and El Salvador. Gathered around the table, we'll give thanks for diversity and celebrate that we are all one in Christ! Bring a Thanksgiving dish that represents your culture or tradition.
2019 Stewardship
We'll also take Udugu Sunday to reflect on our practice of stewardship through Advent and the broader Lutheran Church.

Stewardship pledges made this fall for 2019 are the basis of our 2019 budget, and therefore the scope and impact of our ministry next year. We ask that you begin the process of reflection about your stewardship through Advent in the coming weeks leading up to Udugu Sunday, November 18. Learn more about stewardship >

The following Sunday, November 25, our Council invites you a Budget Hearing, offered at 10am and 12pm, which is an opportunity to learn more and give input about the development of our 2019 Budget.
