Dear friends,

Graduations are happening everywhere this time of year and that’s also the case at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh.  Our Jewish Home University graduation was a festive event on Tuesday morning as we celebrated 32 residents who have completed this year long program of study.  Board member Steven Morey Greenberg gave a wonderful keynote address and he told the graduates that they are all heroes, that their pursuit of life-long learning is an inspiration to all.  Following his talk, our valedictorian Steve gave a beautiful speech.  He talked about the Jewish Home as a place where “day by day each of us grow in knowledge and abilities, accepting our strengths and understanding our weaknesses.”  He told us that “the Jewish Home at Rockleigh rocks!” (click for photos)

Other highlights of the week at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh included a visit with the Kaplen JCC students who provided a Sunday afternoon concert entitled “An Afternoon of Art Songs, Arias and Musical Theater Favorites.”  It was a huge hit!  On Monday, students from Yavneh Academy were here for their annual end-of-year celebration and barbecue. These students work with residents throughout the school year and form wonderful bonds.  At our celebration, we watched the music video they made with the residents and some of the interviews they did with residents. Each interviewee was given a copy of the interview on a flash drive to share with their families. (Photos here)  On Thursday, Chef Mauro took part in the Culinary Club and brought samples of some of the new items that were being considered for the summer menu. There was a lot of tasting and much good feedback!

In the Gallen Day Center, we had a wonderful Father’s Day barbecue and party on Thursday and each of the gentleman, staff and residents alike, received a special gift. (Photos here) On Friday we celebrated our June birthdays with music and dancing, always a favorite in the Gallen Center. The Gallen Center staff and participants also enjoyed learning Tai Chi this week. We have been very fortunate to have a Tai Chi professor join us for eight weeks to teach Tai Chi to staff and residents. Fumin Xue is a Tai Chi expert who specializes in, and has done extensive research, about Tai Chi and health. Fumin is working with Gallen, Jewish Home Assisted Living and the Jewish Home at Rockleigh and we are delighted to have him with us.

At Jewish Home Assisted Living, we enjoyed the Glen Rock Pops on Sunday evening. We followed that with Sisters in Spirit, our monthly women’s club on Monday. We also had a great program that culminated on Monday. Project Halo involved partnering residents with students at Ann Blanche Smith elementary school in Hillsdale. They’ve been penpals and both students and residents loved the experience. On Monday, residents visited the school and got to meet their student penpals. (Click for photos) Everyone loved it! And we have submitted to Nickelodeon where we hope it will not only get airplay but possibly win an prize! On Friday, Professor Ian Drake was back with us to talk about “What to Watch for in the US-North Korea Summit.”

June 15 is always World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. I had the opportunity to speak at a program in Trenton sponsored by the Attorney General’s Office and was glad to have the chance to talk about our SeniorHaven program. (click for video

Elder abuse prevention is also the topic of this week’s blog and here is the link:
