2016 Synod Assembly
The 29th Assembly of the Southeastern Iowa Synod was held
May 6 – May 7, 2016, at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center Coralville, Iowa. Over 400 voting members and visitors gathered around the theme “Drawn to the Light of God.”

Pastor Ruben Duran served as the churchwide representative providing updates and stories of the work we do together as the ELCA. The primary business of this year’s assembly was election of synod council members, the synod consultation committee, and synod discipline committee, as well as several resolutions.

Bishop Michael Burk presided over the assembly, including the Friday evening service of Holy Communion. In his report, Bishop Burk provided highlights of our shared ministry since we last gathered in assembly, providing his assessment of the ways we are being “Drawn to the Light of God.”

Special guest, Pastor Jason Chesnut engaged the Assembly with biblical storytelling from the the gospel of John. Pr. Joel Nau gave a presentation about hunger, Pr. Lee Schott presented about prison ministry and A.J. Houseman gave a talk centered on leadership. Additionally, there were interest groups and forums on various informational topics. Love Your Neighbor
By Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
This column first appeared in Living Lutheran's May issue.

At the end of March, I spent a delightful week with the bishop and rostered leaders of the Montana Synod at their annual theological conference. The added bonus was that we were joined by the bishop and clergy of the Episcopal Diocese of Montana and by Michael Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. There are many things that are unique to our particular traditions, but it became clear that we share a whole lot more. At one point during a presentation, Curry leaned over to me and said that if he closed his eyes he would swear that he was at one of his own meetings.

During the convocation two participants, one Lutheran and one Episcopalian, noted that other civic and religious leaders had issued statements about the need for civil discourse during this election season, and they wondered if the leaders of the ELCA and Episcopal Church could do the same. Both were clear that they didn’t want a political statement or an endorsement of any party or candidate. They just felt that some of the rhetoric was no longer appealing to our better selves, but was opening a door to division and suspicion. They wanted to know if their faith communities could speak a word to our people that could bring some clarity and hope. Read the rest...

Practice Discipleship Initiative
Join us for our first Practice Discipleship offering June 11 at Faith Lutheran in Eldridge from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as we engage in Wondering Through Service Learning and Wondering in Prayer. Training is FREE! Lunch is provided ($5 per person). Register for the June 11 training online.

Wondering through Service Learning – Service learning moves service projects and mission trips from one-time events to experiences that open minds and hearts to new ways of thinking and acting. For example, youth might ponder tough questions about poverty in your hometown, notice the incredible artistry within God's creation, or glimpse the wisdom of a senior citizen in a simple conversation. By emphasizing adequate preparation, intentional reflection, and sharing stories with others, service experiences can be brought to life in profound, astonishing ways. (written by Mark Jackson, Professor & Chair of Children, Youth & Family Studies, Director, Center for Community Engagement, Trinity Lutheran College)

Wondering in Prayer – We teach children the Lord’s Prayer and prayers for meals and bedtimes, and we often teach children how to pray for friends and family. We often stop there. But we are called to worship God with all of heart and soul
and mind. So, in this session we will explore prayer forms that engage the senses and the imagination, opening a space for us both to dwell and to wonder in God. (written by Dr. Mindy Makant, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, Lenoir-Rhyne University)
