Building Update
Our ministry is not the building. The church is not a building. It is, in fact, by definition, the people gathered. But a building is a gift and asset for fostering community as well as anchoring and spring-boarding ministry.

Our building needs several major renovations to make it safe, welcoming, accessible, up to code, and effective in supporting our ministry and growth. The Congregation Council invites you to 3 congregational meetings in the fall to present, discuss, and decide together on the next steps to address these building needs.

In preparation for these meetings, our Congregation Council, pastors, and staff have prepared a comprehensive building update for you.

Please review this building update carefully, and add our 3 congregational meeting dates to your calendar.

Joining the Congregation Council
In this 3-week spotlight, our 3 newest Council members share what it's like to join and serve on our Congregation Council.
Blessing Tawengwa

What has it been like on Council so far?

It's actually a LOT of work. I had a general idea of what it was, but wow: You have to read and comprehend a lot of information and documents beforehand, be present, concentrate, consider complex and consequential choices, and, you know, do work.

What surprised you most about being on Council?

It's a whole process, and you come to actually understand that it is God-led. At the beginning, we do the prayer, we do the devotion. It sets your mind on the bigger picture, and then we go into the details of the church's work.

What does it mean for you, personally and spiritually, to be on Council?

I feel privileged to be doing this. It is very important work. You're asked to have a say in decisions about how the church is run, and where the church is going. The key is remembering while we're doing that it's not for us; it's to live out our mission as Advent Lutheran Church, at this location. That's why we're doing this work. It's important to always remember that and what the bigger goal is.
Mental Health First Aid Training
Tuesday, August 21 | 9am-5pm | Advent Lutheran Church

Have you ever interacted with a person you thought might have mental health or substance abuse issues, and felt like you could have handled the situation better? We are hosting a full-day Mental Health First Aid training led by Thrive NYC on Tuesday, August 21.

ThriveNYC is an unprecedented commitment by the City of New York to create a mental health system that works for everyone. By participating in this training, we at Advent can respond to God's call to love all our neighbors by learning how to better understand and respond to people with mental health issues.

*In the registration portal, first select "Adult Mental Health First Aid - English" and then in the next screen, select "Advent Lutheran Church" as the location.

4 Ways You Can Support Our Ministry this Summer
Our weekly offerings typically dip in the summer months, while many people in our congregation are away. However, we know steady income contributes to a better budget and healthier church.

You can support our ministry from wherever you are during the summer in any of these four easy ways. You might be surprised by how quick and simple they are.
