Dear Museum Members and Friends,

While thinking about the content of this year’s Annual Appeal Letter, I came across the following remarks by J. Ollie Edmunds, the fourth president of Stetson University, on Patriotism and Citizenship.

According to Edmunds, there are two kinds of patriotism. The wartime patriotism, which all of us know about, and a deep, less emotional kind of patriotism practiced in peacetime. The first kind we usually practice on holidays and during perceived threats to our country. The other is something we have held sacred throughout our history – an element in our character that supports the general wellbeing and equality of opportunity for all our citizens.

An important element in maintaining equal opportunity for all is to ensure that the education, social needs and aspirations of our citizenry are nurtured, fulfilled and passed on to those who follow.

The Museum of Art – DeLand recognizes and preserves the achievements of its cultural community, and provides the educational standards by which to encourage future generations to make significant contributions to their heritage.

Your donation to this institution will help nourish and enrich the growth of our community. Human dignity and courage have found no greater voice in this country than in the arts. The arts provide vision and, as vision, they have their social utility.

To sustain one’s “social patriotism,” support of the arts speaks eloquently for mankind by devoting larger possibilities, extending the horizons of consciousness and challenging the system of doctrine and dogma that constrict human aspirations.

Your participation and tax-deductible contributions to this Annual Appeal will make a difference. Of the whole sum of life, no small part is that which consists of our relations to where we live and our desire to sustain and improve it for generations to come.

Sincerely, George Bolge
Chief Executive Officer,
Museum of Art – DeLand, Florida
