Bedford is one of 10 Westchester municipalities that voted this week to source 100% of their electricity demand from renewable energy. This opportunity is the result of the Westchester Community Choice Aggregation program, "Westchester CCA", a New York State pilot that enables participating municipalities to choose where they source their energy demand from and save money by negotiating bulk pricing for their supply.
Bedford 2020 applauds these ten municipalities for making a choice that benefits our community by reducing the use of fossil fuels and providing long-term economic opportunity:
- Choosing the 100% renewable option will help meet our environmental goals at a lower cost than the current cost of electricity.
- By increasing demand for renewable energy, we create strong incentives for electricity providers to expand renewable energy infrastructure and production – an outcome that could drive down costs even more for Bedford citizens.
- Choosing the 100% renewable option supports the development of a renewable energy infrastructure, featuring solar and wind power, that will reinforce the resiliency of our local economy and create a local and regional source of jobs and economic activity.
The Westchester CCA program is launching at the end of March. More details to follow over the next few days.
Congratulations, Bedford for making this momentous choice for 100% renewable energy!
