Online Assembly 2020

Because of safety concerns related to COVID-19, Assembly 2020 was held online. 525 people registered for the Assembly, and approximately 470 of those actually voted at various times. The central event, of course, was the election of a new bishop. 78 pastors were nominated on the first ballot; and after many withdrew their name, 19 remained for the second ballot. The top seven moved on to the third ballot, and there were over 1,000 “views” of the video in which they answered 6 questions from the synod-wide survey conducted earlier.

The third ballot reduced the number to three, and each of them briefly addressed the Assembly. A fourth ballot produced two finalists; and on the fifth ballot, Pastor Chris deForest was elected bishop of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod. Watch for a more complete report in the December issue of Synod News.

More about the Bishop Elect
Agreement with Saxon Church

Representatives of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod and representatives of the Löbau-Zittau church district signed a partnership agreement on October 22 as part of a video conference in the regional church office in Dresden. The agreement with this Lutheran regional church goes back to a longstanding relationship of mutual visits. Representing our synod were Bishop Zeiser, Vice-President Kristen Edelman-Weiner, Ecumenical Advisor Kurt Garbe, and other members of Saxony Committee. On the Saxon side, the Löbauer superintendent Antje Pech and the chairman of the district synod Christian Menzel signed in the presence of those committed to the partnership.

Portico Information

Your 2020 Live Well invitation rewards two activities: (1) Completing a biometric screening ($100) and (2) meeting with a Portico Financial Planner ($100).

In this year of unexpected twists and turns, we’re making it a little easier to receive 2020 wellness dollars. Because of the pandemic, many have had difficulty visiting a clinic to have blood drawn for the screening, so this step has been waived and those eligible and who’ve not yet completed it will receive a credit— $100 to ELCA-Primary members and $100 to eligible spouses. Check your MyPortico Dashboard for verification of the credit. If you (and/or an eligible spouse) haven’t yet completed your financial wellness task, there’s still time from now until November 30th. Learn more on myPortico or call the Customer Care Center at 800.352.2876.

1:1 virtual or phone appointments – now available: Check in with your Portico Regional Rep, Barbara Debski. Do you want to check in on your ELCA Retirement Account with the new Target Date Fund transition? Ask a question about Annual Enrollment? (For members Annual Enrollment starts November 3rd, watch your email for your invitation.) Need a Conference Meeting Speaker? Barb is available to come to your virtual conference meetings and if schedules allow she will bring along Portico’s CEO, Rev. Jeff Thiemann. If you want to reach Barb you can email her at bdebski@porticobenefits.org, or call her directly at 814.977.6189.
