500th Anniversary of the Reformation
October 31, 2017, will mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther posting the 95 theses. This significant reformation anniversary will make Martin Luther and the Lutheran tradition a topic of conversation throughout 2017. Lutheran churches throughout the world are already making plans to commemorate this special event.

Throughout the next year, we invite you all to celebrate the reformation with us. On the Southeastern Iowa Synod's website is a page full of resources from all over the place. We would like to celebrate with you. If your congregation is planning an observance of the 500th anniversary of the reformation, we want to celebrate with you. Please share your plans with Coco Lyons,(lyons@seiasynod.org). Numerous resources can be found on our website by clicking the button below or head on over to www.elca500.org to see how the church as a whole is celebrating.

Fair Labor Standards Act and Your Congregation
The U.S. Department of Labor adopted new overtime regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act that goes into effect Dec. 1. Among other changes, these regulations increase the minimum salary for exempt employees from $23,000 to $47,476. These changes apply to churches.  Each congregation is unique and exemptions depend on the individual context.  The ELCA has provided guidance for congregations in determining exemptions. Bishop Eaton Calls for Veterans Day Prayers

In honor of Veterans Day (Friday, Nov. 11) The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the ELCA, is calling on the church to pray for members of the armed services, veterans, chaplains and their families.

"Let us pray for an ordered civic life and respect for the dignity and worth of every person," Eaton wrote. "In worship on these days, please remember the impact of family separation and mobility for veterans and those currently serving, many of whom are members of our congregations and communities."

ELCA Youth Gathering 2018

Every three years, 30,000 high school youth and their adult leaders gather for a week of faith formation known as the ELCA Youth Gathering. Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship,  young people grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives.

In June 2018 the ELCA Youth Gathering will be held in Houston, Texas with the theme "This Changes Everything" based on the scripture from Ephesians 2:8 "for by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God". As young people desire and struggle to find someone to become, somewhere to belong and something to do, the Gathering seeks to be a ministry that helps define some of that or at least open up pathways of discovery.

ELCA Asks for Prayer and Support for Military and Veterans
The most recent Churchwide Assembly voted unanimously to
“. . . ask the Office of the Presiding Bishop to establish a Sunday of prayer and action closest to Veterans Day each year to unite this church in prayer and encourage practical assistance for military members, veterans, ELCA chaplains and their families.” That Sunday is November 13th.

The Centurion Project, named for the faithful Roman centurion of Matthew 8:5-13, established a network  of more than 25 synod representatives committed to encouraging support for military members, veterans, ELCA chaplains, and their families. The Project has numerous resources available for congregations and individuals for military support. Please consider support for past and present members of the military and their families on
Sunday Nov 13.

The Southeastern Iowa Synod Centurion Project representative is Pastor Robert Bowlin. Please contact him for additional resources to share stories of how you are providing support for military personnel and/or veterans: robertbowlin@earthlink.net or call 309-269-2743

REMEMBER IN PRAYER
Election Day: We pray today that our nation will exercise civility, wisdom and mindfulness of the diverse needs of our communities and neighbors as we choose a new president and leaders. We pray that we will move forward - together - in constructive ways, with our visions, plans and actions guided by God's Spirit.

Veterans Day: On this day, especially, we remember in our prayers and give thanks for the sacrifice and service of men, women and young adults who have served in the U.S. military in the interest of freedom, peace and justice here and throughout the world.
