Write the vision. Make it plain.
As a congregation, we gather the resources of individual congregants and channel them into a shared vision. This vision is grounded in our faith, our listening to God's Word, and our understanding of God's call to us. It's enlivened and sustained daily by the active power of the Holy Spirit.

We at Advent are blessed with the opportunity to bring who we are and what we have together -- even if we are broken and what we have seems little -- so that, united, we may be God's bright light in the Upper West Side. However, claiming that opportunity presents some challenges. First, the challenge for each person to discern what they can contribute. And second, the challenge of together coming up with a crystal clear vision in plain, human terms.

How does that happen? Our Council, committees and task forces, made up of regular congregants, (Meaning you can serve on these! Let one of the pastors or a council member know if you are interested), work throughout the year to discern and oversee our direction as a congregation.

But over the next few weeks our whole congregation discerns our future. This Consecration season is about bringing clarity to our vision, and coming together to support it. Beginning with our first event this Saturday, October 1 and concluding with Consecration Sunday on October 16, these next few weeks provide a variety of opportunities for you to engage in refining the vision. On Consecration Sunday, October 16, we invite you to make a pledge for giving in 2017 so that together we can make our vision a reality.

Go Deeper: Diakonia
Diakonia is a two-year theological and practical ministry educational program for all baptized members of churches of the Metropolitan New York Synod. The three-hour classes meet once a week, October thru May, at various locations throughout the Synod. Advent already has six graduates and we hope that more will consider taking advantage of this amazing program, a time for personal faith growth, discovering the joy of deepening your relationship with God and with your church, and clarifying our call to grace-filled service to our neighbor. Let Pastor Mills know if you are interested.
