June 2018 Newsletter
Dear HPN members,

We’re excited to have you praying with us this beautiful June. We hope that even though you’re praying for Hollywood, you didn’t forget to pray for all the people involved in the Tony Awards this past weekend, celebrating the finest plays on Broadway! We want to embrace all of the Arts and ask God to make His presence known in and through every art form. Let’s pray…..

•  We want all parents to pray with HPN's "Praying Parents"
•  We want to find all of HPN's LA Locals — please let us know you're here!
•  Pray for relationships between women and men in Hollywood
•  Praise God for the many faith-based films that screened at Cannes
•  Our industry has experienced two suicides in the past couple of weeks
•  Pray for Writer/Director Paul Schrader and his new film First Reformed
•  Pray for the Lord to guide the leaders at The Walt Disney Company
•  Pray for the celebrities who have been hurt on social media
•  Pray for and about all of the 2018 summer movies
•  Pray that Christians will make better films than anyone else
•  Don’t miss all of the amazing upcoming events for Christians in Hollywood
Join our Community of Praying Parents
HPN has started a new group called Praying Parents. If you are the parent of an entertainment or media professional of any age, then we'd love to have you join our team of praying parents. We want the next generation of creative professionals to be prayed for, and the best people to start praying are their parents! Let us know if you would like to be a part of our online and/or in-person parents prayer group by emailing Karen at karen@hpnemail.org.
Connect with our LA Locals
If you live and/or work in the Los Angeles area, please email erin@hpnemail.org if you are not receiving our quarterly LA Locals Update email! They include amazing events, gatherings and opportunities for insider Christian Hollywood Professionals. We don't want you to miss out on all that God is doing in LA, so we want to hear from you. It's the perfect way to meet more people and experience God while you live and work here!
Women in Hollywood
HPN board member Kathleen Cooke writes an Influence Lab newsletter to Christian women in the industry. Last month she asked HPN's Karen Covell, "What’s it like to work as a producer in a male-dominated business?" Pray for the fragile relationship between men and women in Hollywood as you read Karen's response below.

Faith-Based Films at Cannes
Praise God for the Cannes Film Festival, which was rich in faith-based films screening there this year. We're thankful that the lineup offered more spiritual content through the work of international filmmakers. Below is an article from before the festival talking about the large number of faith-based films at Cannes.
"Come to Jesus" Moment for Cannes
Pray about Suicide in our Industry
Our industry has experienced two suicides in the past couple of weeks. Please pray with us for the friends and family of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, who both took their own lives, a week apart. We pray for God's comfort and closeness for their loved ones. We also ask God to draw anyone near to Him who is suffering from loneliness, hopelessness, depression, or mental illness in any form; especially celebrities who are sometimes seen as immune to these struggles. The article below, though insightful, does not offer the most powerful solution to such pain – Jesus. However, it reminds us that no matter how successful and fulfilled someone may seem, we still must pray for God's love to touch every damaged part of their lives, especially the invisible ones.

Pray for Paul Schrader's Film First Reformed
Writer/Director Paul Schrader's newest film First Reformed is yet another current film that asks deep spiritual questions. Though it's definitely not for everyone, we do ask that you pray for Paul Schrader's open heart for God and for audiences to leave theatres asking deep questions about their own faith in God our Creator.

Pray for Decision-Makers and Changes at Disney
We ask that you pray for the Lord to guide the leaders at The Walt Disney Company as they make some industry-changing decisions in the coming months. First of all, John Lasseter, the head of Disney Animation and Pixar, has announced that he will step down to a consulting role until Dec. 31st, when he will leave the company. His exit is assumed to be a result of sexual harassment allegations. Pray for John Lasseter's heart, and click here to read about him leaving the company. Secondly, Disney is trying to acquire 20th Century Fox Studios for $52 billion. Thirdly, in 2019, Disney is launching its own streaming platform to stream only their own Disney-made content to the world, online. They are planning to pull much of their content from other streaming services, such as Netflix, and make it only available on their own platform. Pray for wisdom and integrity as all of these deals are made. Let's pray for the acquisition to be led by the Lord, and that the other streaming platforms will create more quality children's programming because of Disney's competition. We believe that your prayers can make an eternal difference at the powerful Disney company and in our industry. Click here to read more about the acquisition and new streaming service.
Pray about Harassment on Social Media
Pray for actress Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars) who has shut down her social media accounts due to intense harassment of her online. We also have to pray for the Lord to hold the tongues and heal the hearts of people on social media who bully, intimidate and post offensive and derogatory comments online. Celebrities including Kelly Marie Tran, Daisy Ridley, and so many others suffer from cruel posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter from "fans" who say things online that they would never say in person. Social media is not in itself "evil," but we see that it's become a platform to expose the darkness in human hearts. So our prayers are needed!

Pray for the 2018 Summer Movies
Let's pray for and about all of the 2018 summer movies, and the impact they have on the people who work on them and the moviegoers. More people go to movies during the summer months, so we ask you to pray for the audiences. We also pray for media coverage of blockbuster films to draw out stories of love and redemption. And remember when you’re at a movie not to walk out before the credits. Stay and use the 10-minute list of names on the credits as a prayer list! Read Time Magazine’s list of 50 movies coming out this summer – another great prayer list.

Pray for Excellence in Christian Filmmaking
Let's pray that Christians will make better films than anyone else! Pray that we will make them as unto the Lord, not necessarily just about the Lord, but with quality and excellence so that they are the best films being made. That is the desire of Christians in Hollywood, who are in an ongoing debate about making "faith-based" films versus making commercial Hollywood films with a message of God’s hope, truth or beauty. Is there a right and wrong way to make films? Alexandra Boylan writes for the website Msinthebiz.com and her newest article addresses her ideas about faith-based films.

Quote Of The Month
This is the reason Christians need to be writing pop culture:
"In the past, one's readership would have had access to the Bible. That would have been where the writer provided common ground to his readers. Now I think it's pop culture. That's our shared Bible."
David Duchovny, author
