Hello Highlands Hikers,

I hope this finds you ready to get back out on the trails! Now that most of the snow seems to be melting and the first signs of spring are appearing its time to launch the 2019 Highlands Hikes. Our first outing will be on April 6th at 10 AM at the Apshawa Preserve in Passaic County.

In the heart of the New Jersey Highlands Apshawa Preserve boasts splendid views over the Butler Reservoir, Apshawa Brook, ruins from the early 1900s, some little waterfalls, extensive views of Highlands forests, and a glimpse of the NYC skyline.

Our route will cover 5.4 miles of moderate trail with a few steep sections at the beginning then take us around Butler Reservoir. Alternatively there is the option to shorten the loop to 4 miles by not going around the reservoir. (A full itinerary is provided below.) After the hike we will head over to Ramstein Brewing Co.

Highlands Hikers is an informal group lead by the NJ Highlands Coalition for people who love the New Jersey Highlands and the splendid opportunity it offers to get outside and experience nature.

Hikes will be scheduled on a rolling basis at different locations both well known and somewhat secret. We also anticipate inviting experts in ecology and local history to guide some of the walks to add to the experience of the Highlands.

Join the Facebook group to see and share photos from Highlands Hikes.

The New Jersey Highlands Coalition

We represent a diverse network of organizations - small and large, local, regional, statewide and national - and individuals with the common goal to protect, enhance and restore the New Jersey Highlands and to preserve the quality and quantity of drinking water both for the 850,000 people in the Highlands as well as the more than 6.2 million people in surrounding areas who depend on Highlands water.
