JFNNJ Awards

Dear friends,

We had quite a week at the Jewish Home Family!  Every day, it seemed, was filled with our usual great activities and some wonderful special events!  It began on Sunday when we literally packed the Belskie Museum in Closter with the opening of our OMA (Opening Minds through Art) exhibit.  The art looks amazing on the walls and the resident artists, families, OMA volunteers and staff were thrilled to see it displayed.  We had a brief program, some lovely refreshments and a wonderful afternoon overall.  One of the Belskie staff told me that they had never had so many people come to the opening of an exhibit before!  The show will remain on display for the month of June so please check the Belskie hours and find the time to go and see it.  You will be glad that you did! On Monday we held our annual Golf, Tennis and Card event at Montammy Golf Club. The morning started out very rainy but by the time the golfers hit the course it had turned into a beautiful day. We had a picture perfect event with great participation in all of the events and at dinner. We were delighted to honor Peter Martin, an active board member and great friend and supporter of the Jewish Home Family. It was a successful fundraiser and a great day! (Click for photos)

On Tuesday and Wednesday some of our executive staff members had the opportunity to participate in the annual conference of our State organization, LeadingAge New Jersey. We had a great conference and both learned from, and were inspired by, many of the presentations. I had the chance to facilitate a Town Hall meeting at the conference. It’s our new approach to public policy at the national LeadingAge board level, with these meetings being held in every state. Our goal is to have our members voice their concerns and issues, which will be compiled and reviewed and then become the basis for our national advocacy agenda. We’re excited about this new approach and our New Jersey members were excited too.

On Thursday evening, we had another special event. I was honored to receive the Howard Charish Professional of the Year award from the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey. It was not only a wonderful honor but a thrill to see so many board and staff members in the audience. I was nominated by one of our board members, which I so appreciate, and the award came as a total surprise to me. While it is great to be honored, I know that the work I do is made possible because of the support of so many—our dedicated lay leadership and board members; our talented management staff; caring employees and volunteers. It is a privilege to work with our elders and a privilege to do it here at the Jewish Home Family.

Around the organization, we also had many great events this week. One of the highlights at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh was our Spiritual Blessing program. The story they talked about was the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. The conversation focused on the seasons of Joseph’s life and the seasons in our lives. The program included an art program and concluded with the singing of “Turn, Turn, Turn.”

At Jewish Home Assisted Living, we continued our program of “clipping for a cause,” having residents save coupons to donate. On Tuesday alone, the coupons represented more than $2500 in potential savings. All of these coupons go to the Troopon program and will be distributed to members of the military and their families all over the world.

The Gallen Adult Day Center had musical events every day this week! They do love singing and dancing in the Gallen Center. They also spent some lovely time outside in the patio enjoying the sunshine!

All the best,
