CA FAIRGROUNDS APPRECIATION MONTH

May kicks-off our annual California Fairgrounds Appreciation Month.  To commemorate the month the California Legislature will pass a Resolution recognizing the importance of the California Fairgrounds service to the State of California on May 20.

CFA will also continue the much-loved fair-themed Legislators’ Reception on May 20th, hosted by our ever-supportive Assembly Member Bigelow. Legislators will join CFA and WFA Board Leadership for a private reception where Legislators are invited to indulge in fair-themed snacks, including corndogs and kettle corn and are offered the opportunity for a photo-op with their districts “I love my Fair” signs.

As California Fairgrounds Appreciation Month concludes, CFA will participate in an informational hearing in the Assembly Ag Committee on June 5th. The Assembly Ag Committee will hear testimony from fair industry representatives sharing our story, speaking about the relevance of Fairgrounds during emergency situations and natural disasters. Invitees to testify at the informational hearing on behalf of the Fair industry include: Karen Ross, CDFA Secretary; Mark Ghilarducci, Director OES; and Fair Industry representatives including: CFA Chair Patricia Conklin, WFA Vice President Cliff Munson,  Del Mar Fairgrounds Deputy General Manager Carlene Moore and Butte County Fair Manager Stephen Kenny. Once the hearing agenda is confirmed, we will share information with California Fairs, all members are welcome to attend.

BE IN THE NEXT FAIR DEALER MAGAZINE

The Blue Ribbon Foundation - Western Fairs Association's charitable arm - produces an annual All Access report within the Summer Edition of the Fair Dealer Magazine, highlighting activities occurring at fairgrounds that bring their communities together in inspiring ways. Past reports have included the veterans projects, fairgrounds serving in response to natural disasters, and unique fundraisers.

What inspiring things have you done for your community? We want to hear from you! Let's share all of the 'toot-your-own-horn' worthy stories with the industry! Email HeatherB@fairsnet.org with a one-paragraph description of your submission. If selected, you will be asked to provide high-resolution photographs to be included in the magazine.

CALIFORNIA FAIR FUNDING

AB 1499
The addition of AB 1499 fair funding to the California State Budget is just the beginning. The Governor’s revised budget will next move through the approval process in the legislature. The California Fairs Alliance will attend all hearings with best efforts to ensure fair funding remains intact. Once approved by the legislature the budget takes effect July 1, 2019. The new fair funding will become available once the Department of Food and Agriculture has completed their expenditure plan for the available funds.

Prop 68/SB 5

Fairs large and small from throughout California voluntarily participated in the recent Facility Conditions Assessment facilitated by the California Construction Authority (CCA). A total of 64 fairs submitted assessments for 257 priority projects on their fairgrounds.

CCA has prepared a master list of all of these submitted projects and this list, along with the projects' supporting documentation, were presented to CDFA's Fairs & Expositions Branch on Friday, April 19. From there, a team at CDFA will make a preliminary selection of projects that will be researched and analyzed in consideration of  financing. In this first round of Bond Measure funding, $3.2 million will be allocated in grants by CDFA.

As the project selection progresses, more information will be shared. This initial response by California's fairs is encouraging and promising!
