Superintendent's Update

Superintendent Dr. Roxane Fuentes

Dear Berryessa Union Students, Staff, Parents, and Residents,

It is with great honor and excitement that I join the Berryessa Union School District as your new Superintendent of Schools. BUSD has a well-known reputation for excellence and I am humbled to serve this community. Since I have been here, I have learned this tradition of excellence exists due to the support of our vibrant community and the dedicated hard work of our students and staff. The pride, enthusiasm, and the close-knit family feeling that permeates BUSD schools and our larger community have been so heart-warming. Thank you for your outreach to me.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself. As you have read, I attended the University of Southern California for both my undergraduate and doctoral degrees. Fight on! I also have had the good fortune to attend CSU Fullerton and CSU Long Beach. I began my career in education as an AVID college tutor and then served as an elementary teacher, instructional coach, principal, and Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. Each of these incredibly rewarding experiences has prepared me for this next level of leadership. I deeply believe in delivering a high-quality and comprehensive education for all students, in the importance of developing a growth mindset, and in the power of learning from others through mentorship and community service. I fully embrace BUSD’s mission to provide all students the skills to become lifelong learners and successful 21st-century global citizens.

My mission as your Superintendent parallels my passion to offering every student a rigorous teaching and supportive learning environment where all students have a strong sense of belonging and are inspired to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. It is critical to every student’s future success that they promote from BUSD with the skills and capabilities necessary to pursue and achieve their goals and dreams. I believe these goals are best achieved by a school system that builds relationships based on trust, community, collaboration, and transparency. I look forward to kicking off my tenure with a Strategic Planning session with the District leadership on September 12th, which I will report on in our next monthly newsletter.

Morning Meeting the PTA Leaders

During the following weeks, I look forward to visiting schools and classrooms, participating in community meetings, and working with our Berryessa Union leadership team to develop goals that will expand our student-focused excellence and drive us toward continuous improvement in all that we do.

Finally, I want to congratulate Mr. Will Ector, Jr. for his 44 years of exemplary service and leadership in the educational field. I wish him well in his retirement!

With great pride,

Dr. Roxane Fuentes
Superintendent

School Meals

Please note that if your children qualified for free or reduced lunch in 2016-17, you will need to complete a 2017-18 free/reduced meal application to see if they will continue to qualify.  If we do not receive a complete application for your children by September 8, 2017, they will automatically lose their free or reduced-price eligibility status and will need to pay full price for meals ($2.00 for breakfast, $3.00 for lunch) beginning on September 11, 2017. If you did not receive an application in the mail, please stop by the new Student Nutrition Services office as soon as possible to complete one. The new SNS office is located at 951 Piedmont Rd (adjacent to Piedmont Middle School).

Anyone may apply for the free/reduced meal prices at any time during the school year.  However, the more students at your school who qualify for free or reduced price meals at the start of the school year, the more money your school can receive from the government to spend on student programs.

Bryan Stow Visits Piedmont Middle School

Piedmont Middle Schoolers kicked off their school year with an inspiring anti-bullying presentation from Bryan Stow, the Bay Area first responder who was brutally attacked at an L.A. Dodgers baseball game.

Bryan Stow's courageous presentation showed students firsthand the effects of senseless physical bullying, shared his painful recovery struggle, and taught the students techniques for empowering "a path of kindness" in those with bullying tendencies.
