Saint Andrew youth did a fantastic job of leading us in worship Sunday! Their theme, “True Colors,” was meaningful and inspirational. Huge thanks to everyone who participated – from our wonderfully creative and talented youth in Chi Rho and SAY, to their dedicated sponsors, Lesa Chandler and Jon Seitz, to Cindy Egger for her help with the music, to Chuck Pickrel, our Youth Minister! We are blessed to have these youth leading us and can’t wait for the next time!

Scripture: Genesis 38:1-26

I know lots of folks who are fascinated with researching their family genealogy. My husband Rick and I haven’t done this, but our son-in-law Brendan, who has done a lot of work on his family tree, took a peek at mine. Among my not-so-illustrious ancestors is a horse thief!

Not all of our ancestors were stalwart, upright pillars of the community. It is interesting to note than in the gospel of Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus (Mt 1:1-17) there are five women listed. Mary, Bathsheba, Ruth, Rahab, and Tamar. That any women are listed at all is remarkable. The gospel of Luke, even though it is generally regarded as most favorable toward women, lists none. Even more remarkably, all of the women who are named as ancestors of Jesus were scandalous in one way or another.

Our scripture this week tells the story of Tamar, perhaps the least known of the five women. It’s a strange little story—full of sex and greed and deception. And also full of hope and a subversive message about the empowerment and vindication of women.

Rev. René Jensen, Interim Senior Pastor

Musicians this Sunday are:
Darin Seidel, Lindsay Waller, Alex Waller Cindy Egger-Farris

If you are new to our community we invite you to join Rev. René Jensen and Rev. Mark Harmon for an informal time to get to know each other a little better and answer any questions you may have about Saint Andrew. We will gather in the Sr. Pastor’s Office at 9:30 am. Please to let us know you are coming. Childcare available.

Our relationship with El Higueral has been an integral part of our church since almost the beginning of our existence. It has been a history that has enriched both them and us as a community and as individuals. We have grown and changed as has the Salvadoran community. On May 19th at 9:30am, Room 102, we will meet to take a look at where we have been together, what we have accomplished and how our relationship has evolved. We will consider our long term goals, and the vision we have for this relationship. We hope you will join us for this discussion.

The caregiver support group will meet from 3:00-4:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. On the 1st Sunday it will meet at Saint Andrew Christian Church and on the 3rd Sunday it will meet at offices of VITAS Healthcare (8527 Bluejacket Drive, Lenexa, KS 66214). If you have any questions, please contact Mark Harmon,

Our Relationship with Food: It's Complicated with Shana Arnhold
A discussion about the complex influences that shape our feelings toward food and our bodies. We will examine the conventional medical approach to “health” and its shortcomings, as well as a different approach that is gaining recognition and delivering lasting health benefits--the anti-diet movement.

Shana Arnhold is a Physician Assistant in gastroenterology who has been practicing in the KC area since 2007. In the quest to help people live healthier lives, she began a Health Improvement Program through the practice but soon discovered that she (and conventional medicine in general) didn’t have the tools needed to help facilitate positive long-term change. Unsatisfied with just allowing patients to struggle, she dove into the psychological aspects of healthy behaviors, sought the help of local professionals, and co-authored a book called FREE TO BE: The non-diet approach to peace with food and body, which aims to help people adjust their mindset to free themselves from the confines of dieting forever.

CLEAN WATER - 884 million people around the world do not know, on a daily basis, where they will get water. This affects the lives of girls, in particular, charged with finding and bringing water to their homes. Many spend hours each day doing this, preventing them from attending schools or working to support families.
Mission & Outreach
The Saint Andrew Mission Team resolves to seek God, create community and practice justice by actively promoting congregational engagement in the community, both locally and globally.

There are additional Mission Reports in the Hearth Room and online HERE.

We will have a meeting at 9:30 am in Room 102 to discuss our mission, goals and plans for El Higueral. This meeting is for anyone who is interested in attending.
