MALAWI: MIRACLES IN THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA
I am truly sorry that this UPDATE E-NTERCESSION is so delayed. I appreciate your prayers as I recover from a lung infection from our last AFRICA MISSION. Though I am no longer contagious, I am suffering post-infection upper respiratory inflammation. We are continuing to pray and I am starting a new inhaled cortico-steroid. Please pray for healing as we are packing to leave for Africa this weekend.

MIRACLES IN THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA

Come with us on the street, on the field and on stage for this raw, radical celebration of the miracles and lives changed during the MISSION SOS/ GLOBAL TEEN CHALLENGE GOO NEWS FESTIVAL in Lilongwe, Malawi. This sweeping video tells the story in ways words and snapsshots cannot capture.

SOS KIDS: Impacting an emerging generation of Africans

It was a blessing to partner with Lauren Wiberg, director of SOS KIDS as they pioneered their new ministry to meets the needs of children. Over 1,200 kids confessed faith in Jesus for the first time.
CLICK FOR VIDEO .

In partnership with Pamela Ayres, a longtime friend and her ministry with Power Clubs, we had the opportunity to see over a thousand kids make commitments to Christ and be filled with the Holy Spirit. We also engaged an opportunity to train leaders to start follow-up ministry outreaches as Power Clubs are being launched by passionate children's workers as we move forward to minister in Rwanda.

With MISSION SOS unable to locate a venue a large enough to accommodate nearly 200 missionaries, a unique innovation for MISSION SOS Lilongwe was the tent city which we named Camp Hope, housing over 100 missionaries.

Though tents were a bit "rustic", I believe it was a great experience that prepared the team to be even more effective in our ministry. It helped us to better identify with "reality" for many Malawians … 50.7% of the Malawian population lives in poverty and goes to bed hungry.  We were not impoverished, we had blankets, pillows and we were comfortable, plenty of ugali  and well-fed. Though the housing situation had fewer “comforts” to accommodate the flesh, I have a sense that this was one of the closest and most powerful Mission SOS teams we have worked with.

We were truly blessed to see our International Teen Challenge Africa team lead the way in service and sacrifice--a great team, great men and women of God. They were tireless workers, bulletproof, contagious Kingdom freedom fighters At night, even as  temperatures dipped to 5 degrees, they continued to serve cheerfully to bring the Good News. They awakened each day ON FIRE, empowered to reach the lost.

MALAWI TC PASTOR'S AWARENESS

As SOS focused on Evangelism, we also worked closely with Eneah Banda, executive director of TC Malawi. A Pastors' Awareness meeting with 40 strategic leaders proved to be a critical step in launching TC in Malawi.

E-VOTION
JESUS-the Real SUPERHERO

Bern

Although He existed in the form of God, He did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:5

As we prepare to head back to Africa for MISSION SOS Rwanda, the SOS KIDS theme is again Jesus the Real Superhero. Through God’s Word, drama, music and ministry, it has been exciting as we watch the Holy Spirit capture the imagination and the HEARTS of African children with Jesus Christ, the Real SuperHero.

Since I was a little kid, I have always loved Marvel’s superheroes. I am a huge Superman fan.  To me, he has the most complete set of powers: x-ray vision, flight, super strength, etc. (Although I never understood why, after bullets bounce off of him, he still had to duck when they threw the empty gun.) He's invincible, except for the whole kryptonite thing.  I also think Batman is pretty cool and I really can identify with the Hulk’s temper (but I don't have any actual superpower).  What made them superheroes?  They had individual superpowers and they needed no one else. They had the ability to solve earth’s problems in real time.

For Bible superheroes, Samson seems to have that whole Incredible Hulk vibe going for him.  How about David? He is a shepherd, poet, warrior, lady’s man, king. I would watch David’s giant-killing mini-series. For some, Jesus may not seem like the best example of a superhero. Jesus doesn't "bust heads" with a donkey's jaw-bone. He doesn’t kill giants, expose Herod’s wicked rule like John the Baptist or face down Roman legions to liberate Jerusalem. Even conceding the whole storm-stopping, walking-on-water, healing thing -- apart from the Ascension, He can't even fly!  That does not give us much to work with when Lex Luthor decides to blow up the sun or there is a sudden zombie apocalypse. I mean; will Jesus go around healing all the zombies? Over 100,000 will hear the good news. We will train 68 TC leaders. Can you help us with the $25,000 invested in these outreaches?

With an opportunity to "wow" a big crowd, He does not levitate or raise a big rock, He just makes lunch for over 5,000 men. OK, I admit the food thing was pretty cool. He could possibly get a show on Food Channel, do Bar Rescue with the whole "water into wine" thing or even open a catering business. But how does that liberate Israel from the cruel occupation of an evil Caesar or repel invading hordes of Philistines?

In a totally anti-climactic "origins" story, superhero-in-training, Paul,  gets arrested in Philippi, and from a prison cell reminds us that in Incarnation, Jesus gave up all of His cool superpowers to come to earth. He became a man--a slave. Not a wild-eyed Scorsese-conceived weapon-totin',  freedom fighter. According to Philippians, Jesus was just a plain old slave with nothing, no one and no place to sleep. All Jesus had was complete dependence upon God the Father and by superhero measures, dependence is a terrible superpower. It can get you killed.

Jesus didn't take down a single Roman on his way to the cross!  He was betrayed by one of His own and under attack, when one of his aspiring “X-men First Class” tried to defend him by cutting off a slave’s ear. Jesus HEALED the guy. I am pretty sure Peter wasn’t aiming for an ear. It’s a good thing the slave ducked, (although it might have enhanced Jesus' “street cred” as a superhero to replace a whole head).  The final stand of Jesus' X-men was 11 running for their lives, and one denying Him. The Joker never killed Batman. Sabertooth never killed Wolverine. Mephisto will never destroy Thor or the Silver Surfer.  The superhero always lives on in the comics, but Jesus’ death on earth does not define his role in eternity.

Whether you think it was the Jews, Roman soldiers or satan leading Jesus to the cross -- they did not TAKE His life. Jesus GAVE His life for us.  He surrendered himself to death on earth, taking the weight of our sin and shame in order that we might have life eternal.

That brings us to a despairing Sunday morning with the disciples cowering in fear. Mary Magdalene, the girl from whom 7 demons were cast out(she’s no Wonder Woman), comes to the grave to find an EMPTY TOMB. He is RISEN from the dead, the tomb was EMPTY.  He was alive again in a way no one had ever been alive before.

ALIVE in a “now-I-can-live-inside-of-you" and "with-Me-inside-greater-works-you-can-do-anything" sort of way.   Resurrected in a "broke-the-chains-of-sin-and-death" way that gives hope to the broken,  freedom to the bound and life to a dying world. JESUS CONQUERED DEATH! He was ALIVE in a fullness of dependence upon the Greatest Power the world has ever known, the LOVE of God the Father. That is why Jesus is the REAL SuperHero.

A love who is Christ the Word, who created and sustains the cosmos (Col 1:17). The compassion that knew our suffering, endured hatred and scorn and even death so that from this day forward…  nothing, neither a zombie plague nor an exploding sun, neither an alien invasion nor a death ray could separate us from God. (Rom 8:31)

Do you know that supernatural power of following Him?

You see, even if Superman could save us from the impending doom of a meteor plummeting toward earth or the evil plans of Lex Luthor, in the end, we all die. Only Jesus can come into your life, take the awful weight of your sin and give you eternity! He offers never-dying life with HIM forever.

Now that is a real SUPERHERO!

WASHING THE FEET OF CHILDREN

SOS Kids pioneered a new asset in the SOS arsenal, targeting "at risk" children, to bring the good news, and ministering to practical needs. What a blessing to see them receive Jesus and the delight on their face when we tell them everyone of them will get a new pair of shoes.
For many, it will be the first pair of shoes they have ever owned. Before our team gives them the shoes, they pray and wash their feet.

For a few moments, these children, most abandoned, feel special. In a culture where children are traditionally "handled roughly," Many have never felt a "tender touch."

As we pack for Rwanda, we still face the daunting challenges of that $24,000 AMEX bill for ground fees, transportation, and Africa flights for Mission SOS Malawi. Thank You to those who helped clear the first $6,000. As we turn our hearts to heaven, knowing that God can provide, please pray with us, especially as we face another $10,000 for SOS Rwanda with a team of almost 50 in 2 weeks.

1) Pray for MISSIONS SOS RWANDA

We are heading to Kigali, Rwanda for the second African Capital City Tour Trip this summer!! Around 600 vests have been packed up for the local volunteers who will be serving alongside of us during the festival! We can’t wait to see how God is going to move in the beautiful city of Kigali.

2) YUCCI ALABAMA Global Teen Challenge Executive Council

Please pray for the upcoming Global Teen Challenge Executive Council, 16 July through 19 July, as TC leaders from around the world gather for strategic prayer, vision casting, and to mobilize to Put Hope Within the Reach of almost 300 million addicts worldwide. Pray for safe travel as leaders come from six continents to convene at this critical meeting.

3) THAILAND

So grateful that we were able to change this "prayer REQUEST" to a "PRAISE report" . Praise the Lord that all 12 of the Thai Wild Boars soccer team and their coach were rescued from the Tham Luang cave system, where the group was trapped in northern Thailand. One of the rescuers, Derek Anderson, is the son of Assemblies of God m*ss*onaries to Ecuador. Anderson, who is the father of a nine year old daughter and a six year old son, was stationed in Okinawa with his US Air Force Pararescue Team. Their special forces team, that specializes in diving, caving and emergency rescue, traveled to Thailand at the end of June to help develop a strategy to bring the boys and coach out of the flooded cave. Thank you Lord for bringing the team out and for the people that worked tirelessly to make it happen.

4) Washington DC: Teen Challenge USA 60th Anniversary

Pray for the celebration commemorating 60 years since the founding of Teen Challenge by David Wilkerson in 1958. As staff and directors from around the world meet in Washington DC on July 23, Cathy and I are disappointed we cannot be there. Though we will be in Rwanda, our hearts will still be rejoicing with our dear TC family at 60 years of God's awesome miracles. With over 1400 centers in 120 countries, LOOK WHAT GOD HAS DONE!

5) Prayer FOCUS: GOOD NEWS FESTIVAL RWANDA - MISSION SOS

CLICK FOR SOS VIDEO

FOCUS your prayers as the MISSION SOS Good News Festival opens on Wednesday July 25. We are praying for some specific breakthroughs and against the powers of darkness trying to hinder what God has called us to accomplish in Kigali.

Agree with us on these points, and please reply with anything the Lord speaks to your heart as we prepare to engage dark spiritual forces on the battlefield.

  • Pray for the sound system operation and final setup-especially for the children's festival stage.
  • Pray for the street outreaches across Kigali all week long-22-29 July.
  • Pray for Evangelist Johannes Amritzer and all of the 180 missionaries who are part of this outreach.

TEAM PRAYER PRIORITIES/FESTIVAL PRAYER PRIORITIES

A spirit of unity within our diverse team of 180 missionaries from Europe, Africa and the US. Psalm 133:1 & Colossians 3:14--and 50 Africa TC Leaders and students.

For Rwandan pastors & churches who partner with SOS for the Kigali Festival. Ecclesiastes 4:9

For God to prepare & purify the festival grounds.
It is a place known for drinking, parties & drug use. Deuteronomy 11:24a

Financial breakthrough & 100% funding for each of our team members. Psalm 144:13

This is a moment to exercise your spiritual authority, engage in the spiritual warfare that is waging around the plans for this festival. We must pray for a Shock and Awe outpouring on the powers of darkness as we prepare to head to Kigali.

WE ARE REMINDING THE FORCES OF DARKNESS THAT:

  • • He that is in us, is greater than He that is in the world. 1 John 4:4
    • You, Lord will cause the enemy, who has raised up against this festival in Kigali, to be defeated before us. He will come in against us one direction, but flee before us in seven directions, in the name of Jesus! Deuteronomy 28:7
    • What the enemy has meant for evil, Lord, you will turn around for good in Kigali; for the saving of many lives, as they receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Genesis 50: 20
    • That by our hand, Lord, the unreached people will be delivered out of the hand of the enemy and wicked, unreasonable men. 2 Thessalonians 3:2
Please pray for the Rwanda Festival Committee.

Pray with us for the global advance of the gospel. Pray for workers for the Harvest ...Teen Challenge Centers in 120 countries need staff and we currently have invitations to start Teen Challenge in over 32 new nations. They are crying out for help. They need the power of God to meet a pressing social need... but we know it has a SPIRITUAL ROOT. We offer SPIRITUAL RESOURCES to meet PRACTICAL needs.

MATTHEW 9: 37 Then He said to His disciples,
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.
38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send
out workers into His harvest.”
