Worship 8:30am & 10:45am
Education 9:30am
Fourth Sunday in Lent

When I lived in the desert, I found it difficult to get into the spirit of Lent. Yes, the landscape reflected a very literal wilderness… with the rocks, the cactus, the dust and the winding mountain paths, you’d think it would be easy to embrace a season of repentance and mortality. But the problem was the weather. Lent usually falls across the spectrum of February to April—which, in the southwest, means absolute paradise. Sparkling blue skies, wildflowers everywhere, temperatures in the 60s to 80s, and what the local weather crew typically called “an abundance of sunshine.” It’s kind of hard to feel the weight of the world’s suffering when all of creation is bursting with joy.

It’s difficult to long for resurrection when it’s already happening, all around you.

Now Kansas… that’s another story. We are all about the proper Lent posture around here. Maybe we’ve caught a few glimpses of spring the past few weeks, but as I write this it is SNOWING outside my window. The wind is howling and the skies are serious about being gray. So in addition to longing for desert blue skies (frequently dotted with hot air balloons, by the way) I’m desperately hoping for spring. Any minute now, right?

Unless you live in a region with year-round sunshine, the liturgical calendar tends to align with the rhythms of nature. The changing air and light, the appearance of green growing things, the lengthening of days… It all moves us towards a day when God will make all things new, one way or another. And just as the changing season makes us long for new life, the news of the world that we live in reminds us how desperately we need God to do a new thing. Gun violence; poverty; families torn apart by deportation; sexual abuse and widespread discrimination; growing divides across race, culture and religion… and that’s just today.

In our scripture this week, Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom “is not from this world.” That’s some comfort, perhaps… But it’s not meant to make us comfortable. Rather than setting our sights on an other-worldly realm, we are called to help bring God’s kingdom about, here on earth. We are called to be resurrection people, Awake to the signs of life all around us. In every season.

CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)
Saint Andrew CSA News - Time to Sign Up for 2018 CSA
It is time to sign up for the 2018 Saint Andrew CSA. Our farm family from 2017 - Swa Dit, Mee Nge, Habay, and Ramat - have missed their Saint Andrew friends over the winter and are very excited to return! They have more land to farm this year and plan to provide even more variety of produce for us. They anticipate starting our CSA the last week in April, earlier than last year.

As a refresher, each Saint Andrew participating family pays in the spring for the whole year. This allows the farm family to buy seed and starts so that they can plant and grow our produce for the year. A small share will cost $280 and a large share will cost $420. This will be paid with a check made out to Swa Dit and can be given to him on March 11th. The family would like to have a short meeting with all participants at noon on March 11th in Friends Hall. At that time, they can answer questions and collect your annual payment. If you cannot attend this meeting, please give your check to Gloria Hiller and she will give it to the family on March 11th.  Please contact Gloria if you have questions regarding CSA.

Pastor's Class
Pastor's Class is our baptism and confirmation class designed for 5th through 8th graders. We explore what it means to be a Christian, to belong to God, and to be a member of the Christian community. If your child has not been baptized, or was baptized as an infant, this class, in which they are paired with a mentor from our congregation, will give them the opportunity to consider their beliefs, doubts, questions, and passions. Baptisms and confirmations will take place on Sunday, June 3. Classes start in April on Wednesday evenings, but we need early registrations so we can begin our planning and recruitment of mentors. Please contact Rev. Denise Dugan if you have questions or to register for the class.

Tall Oaks Summer Camp

Mark your calendars for June 18-22, 9am to noon.  VBS is for preschool through 5th grade children, and we’ll need 6th through 12th graders and adults to sign up to work in activity sites or as group leaders. This year’s theme is Rolling River Rampage: Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with God!

Women's Ministries
Wise Women
March 8
7pm, Friends Hall

All of us have had laboratory tests performed, some routine, some to help identity a variety of medical conditions and diseases. As necessary as they are, the results can be confusing as it is often difficult to make sense of numbers, ranges...and the connection with our state of health. On March 8th, Jean Cooper will help us look at basic laboratory tests to include blood count (CBC), chemical profile, and Urinalysis (UA).

Jean Cooper MPA, MT(ASCP) CT, was program director for the school of Clinical Laboratory Science for 28 years at North Kansas City Hospital. He was also Clinical Assistant Professor at KU Med Center. He taught all areas of the clinical laboratory relating to diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions and diseases. Jean Cooper is a member of Saint Andrew Christian Church.

Come and join us. It will be an educational program. As always, Wise Women is a group for women of all ages, and friends are always welcome. For questions or comments, please contact Rejane Henn 816 587 1015 or rejanechantalhenn@gmail.com.
