Dear friends,
If you visited the Jewish Home at Rockleigh this week you might have thought you made a wrong turn and ended up south of the border! Our annual cruise week, sponsored by the Lippman family, took us on a wonderful trip to Mexico! Decorations, costumes, Mexican treats, music and more. Cruise week is always a very special time for us and a huge hit with residents, visitors and staff. We began on Monday by delivering the “cruise itinerary” to all of our elders. That was followed by a program on the history of Mexico that prompted a lot of conversation. In the afternoon, we held a “Meet the Captain” party with music and delicious quesadillas, flan and cherry parfaits. Women’s Club also met Monday and they talked about their travels and the Mexican foods they enjoyed! Monday evening’s program was a Mexican game called “Loteria,” similar to Bingo but with pictures and was a big hit. Tuesday’s highlight was our Mexican Fiesta and Food Festival held on the “Main Deck,” more commonly known as Main Street at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh. We dined on tacos, churros and Pina coladas and enjoyed the decorations and music. In the afternoon we were entertained by a mariachi band that got everyone moving. On Wednesday morning, elders on the Rubin unit enjoyed a session of games with a Mexican flair and elders on Kaplen 2 had fun with “Spanish 101,” which included learning some Spanish phrases. Elders on the Seiden unit went on a musical journey to Mexico and had fun shaking tambourines and maracas in time to the music. Wednesday evening found us dining at “Pancho’s Bar and Mexican Grill” enjoyed chicken kebabs and margaritas with the music of Peter Pix enlivening the atmosphere! Thursday morning focused on the flora and fauna of Mexico and also had fun learning the “Jerabe topatio,” which is a Mexican hat dance. Thursday afternoon another mariachi band joined us and the participation and enthusiasm were great. Finally, wrapping up Friday we had Mexican Mustache Madness! We had a great time trying mustaches on everyone and posing for some truly silly photos. Before our cruise “docked,” we enjoyed a fun and musical “adios to Mexico” party. Cruise week is made possible by the Doris and William Lippman Endowment Fund for Resident Entertainment, in memory of Doris Lippman. (Click here for photos)
Jewish Home Assisted Living began a great week with a lively game of Bingo on Sunday, as requested by our elders. Rabbi Korenblit also held a discussion group on “Methuselah: The Man who Lived 969 Years.” On Memory Lane, Rabbi Korenblit also led a discussion group and there were also hand massages and an ice cream sandwich social. On Monday, Jewish Home Assisted Living residents enjoyed an clothing and accessory shopping program, always a big hit. We also had a challenging new trivia game in the afternoon that everyone enjoyed. Tuesday was Tony Bennett’s birthday so we marked the day with a program and the documentary “Tony Bennett: An American Classic.” We also enjoyed the beautiful day with a Happy Hour on the back patio. On Wednesday the monthly Syril Rubin Book Club featured “Mademoiselle Chanel” by C. W. Gortner. We also enjoyed our August birthday party followed by a performance by Exodus Supreme, a steel drum band, part of the Billie Kramer concert series. Thursday featured a program on Lucille Ball as well as Tai Chi. And on Friday our friend Professor Ian Drake presented “How do televised debates affect the Presidential primaries?” Rabbi Korenblit also offered a special program entitled “Why is Tisha B’Av the saddest day in the Jewish calendar?”

Meditation began the week in the Gallen Day Center, a great way to center ourselves after the weekend. We also enjoyed a Monday sing-a-long and our Buddy program participants enjoyed making “monkey bread” together. On Tuesday we focused on exercise with Tai Chi, boxing and noodle ball. We also enjoyed the trivia game of “What State is That?” On Wednesday the Gallen participants were dancing to live music in the morning and in the afternoon we had fun with a new program, Drama Club. Thursday’s highlight was a celebration of Lucille Ball’s birthday and that was followed by some wonderful volunteers playing the pianos. We rounded out the week on Friday with boxing, baking, anagrams and a fun outdoor game of “peaceful parachute.”
All the best, ![]() Carol Silver Elliott
