Action Alert: Show your support for a Green Amendment to New Jersey's Constitution

Sign the petition supporting the Green Amendment, ensuring New Jersey residents' right to clean air, clean water and a healthy environment!

New Jersey has some of the most advanced and comprehensive environmental regulations in the nation.

Yet, 60% of our public water systems are contaminated with known carcinogens, and only one river in the State meets all guidelines for drinking, swimming and fishing;

Yet, New Jersey leads the nation in the number of Superfund Sites at 114 (second, at 89 sites is California - which is 22 times the size of NJ!);

Yet, 11 of New Jersey’s 21 counties received an F rating from the American Lung Association as air pollutants and smog continue to cause asthma, cancer and other respiratory and cardiac diseases;

Yet, hundreds of acres of our valuable, last remaining, ecologically healthy forests, which are our State's best defense against the impacts of climate change, are constantly threatened by unsustainable development...

Because we don't prohibit pollution or properly regulate development. Our environment and the natural resources we enjoy and depend upon are in slow motion decline. It's because in New Jersey we have no right to clean water, clean air and a healthy environment.

We can change that by amending the New Jersey Constitution to guarantee residents the legal right to clean water, clean air and a healthy environment!

The New Jersey Highlands Coalition is at the forefront of a growing movement supporting a Green Amendment for New Jersey.

Bills SCR134 and ACR259 propose a constitutional amendment for New Jersey, that would ensure that the right to clean water, clean air and a healthy environment would be protected as firmly as our other inalienable rights, like the right to free speech or private property rights.

In addition the provision identifies the State as trustee of public natural resources including the water, air, flora, fauna and the climate, with an obligation by government officials to conserve and maintain these resources for the benefit of present and future generations of New Jersey.

Currently, the legislation passed out of the Senate Environment Committee and has been introduced in the Assembly. With your support we can show legislators the value of a Green Amendment for New Jersey.
