On July 30th the NJ Assembly will hear the New Jersey Cumulative Impacts Bill (S232/A2212), which grants the Department of Environmental Protection authority under reasonable circumstances to reduce disproportionate pollution impacts in environmental justice communities. The Bill represents an overdue need to correct a legacy of environmental racism and injustice by expanding the rights of local stakeholders to participate in the decision making process, reducing the burden of persistent pollution that results from toxic industries, and making New Jersey a leader in the environmental justice movement. The bill authorizes DEP to deny a permit in a burdened community upon a finding that the permit, with consideration of cumulative impacts, poses unreasonable health risks to the community and its environment.
