Dear friends,
The many donors who participate in our annual Boneh Olam giving program make a tremendous difference to the Jewish Home Family. Their generous gifts enable us to support programs, fund new initiatives and enhance quality of life and care for our residents. Once a year we hold a “thank you” event so that we can tell them, in person, just how important they are to us. The Jewish Home Foundation staff organizes an incredible event each year and every year they seem to top themselves! This year’s theme was “Safari” and the Community Room and patio at Jewish Home Assisted Living were decorated to the max. The food, which was great, had an African theme and was all prepared by the JHAL culinary team. (Click here for photos) It was a wonderful evening and, more importantly, it was a chance for us to connect with the supporters who are so vital to the work that we do. Want to know more about Boneh Olam? We would love to tell you. Email Melanie Cohen, Executive Director of the Jewish Home Foundation, at mcohen@jewishhomefamily.org and she will give you all the details!
We had a great week in the Gallen Day Center this week with big plans for the week ahead! On Monday we enjoyed a visit from a music therapist and on Tuesday we had a great time celebrating National Lemonade Day. Not only did we sip some refreshing beverages, we reminisced about lemonade and having lemonade stands. We also enjoyed boxing, Tai Chi and a game of Conversation Starters, which helped people learn some new things about one another. Wednesday included a session of the Buddy Program, Delay the Disease, a meeting of our Participant’s Council and a raucous session of Laugh Active Yoga. On Thursday we had a lunch outing to Bistro Filipino which was a big hit and in the afternoon there was an interesting program featuring exotic instruments from around the world. On Friday we celebrated Gene Kelly’s birthday with a presentation about his life and his work. Next week is Cruise Week in the Gallen Center and we are heading to the Mediterranean, stopping in ports in Spain, Morocco and Israel. Can’t wait for our travels to begin!

At the Jewish Home at Rockleigh our week began on Sunday with a fun International Tunes Live program on the Seiden unit followed by an Afternoon of Music featuring singer/pianist Mark Richards who performed a variety of folk and popular American songs. There was a lot of clapping to the music as well as singing along! On Monday we celebrated World Photo Day with a photography program on the patio. Elders enjoyed a “nature walk” to the gazebo and taking pictures of seasonal birds and flowers as well as ducks and geese. We use IPads to enable elders to take photos and they’re quite proficient with this technology! Tuesday included Drum Circle on the Seiden unit, while elders on Rubin enjoyed Power Dance and those on Kaplen 2 did Tai Chi. The afternoon featured a lively bowling tournament which had both lots of participants and lots of cheerleaders. On Wednesday we enjoyed boxing, a program on “The Sound of Music” and, in celebration of Poet’s Day, a poetry reading and discussion. Some of our elders read their original poetry to the group and it was really a special session. We had Music Classics, a biography program, Alphabet Soup, Karoake and Chaplain’s Forum on Thursday and rounded out the week with a lunch outing to the Northvale Diner along with Bingo, Brain Teasers and Happy Hour!
On Sunday elders at Jewish Home Assisted Living had a great start to their day with Mind Joggers, a favorite program. This week’s session included a variety of puzzles that required you to change your way of thinking from one puzzle to the next. These brain teasers were fun and much enjoyed by all. We also had a big crowd for a travelogue of Spain and Portugal. On Monday we began with a lecture on Florence Chadwick, the first woman to swim the English Channel. We also had fun “Baking with Avi,” as our mashgiach Avi Feld taught elders to bake delicious strawberry cake. Tuesday began with our Knitting Club, with both blanket knitting and schmoozing on the agenda. We enjoyed Trivia and then a showing of the requested film “Apollo 13.” On Wednesday we had a great time with young people from the Boys and Girls Club of Paterson who came to pick up the backpacks our elders had filled for them last week. Memory Lane residents enjoyed a choice of programs, either news discussion or hand massages. Many opted to do both! On Wednesday evening another concert from the Billie Kramer Concert series brightened everyone’s week. This week’s performer was Eril Pilor presenting “Songs from Around the World.” On Thursday Rabbi Korenblit led a discussion on the first Jew to arrive in New Amsterdam in 1654. He also hosted a session of the Yiddish Club. Friday included a program on news headlines as well as a great session of stretching exercises. We wrapped up Friday afternoon with Professor Ian Drake. His topic this week was “What is the Status of U.S-Iran Relations?”
