Retirement Announcement

This month, I announced my retirement after six inspiring years at BUSD and a total of 43 years dedicated to education. I was honored to read BUSD School Board President Thelma Boac’s comments about my tenure at Berryessa Union School District.

“Mr. Ector’s leadership at the district greatly improved the quality of our educational programs, strengthened the district’s connection with our local community, and increased student achievement. While we are sad to see Mr. Ector’s departure, we are grateful for his strong ability to set high goals and adjust resources to achieve those goals and always maintaining a student-centered focus for every decision.”
~ Thelma Boac, School Board President.

I am proud of our district’s achievements, such as creating 21st Century learning environments at every school, increasing student access to classroom technology, extending the district’s parcel tax, and passing the first facilities bond in over 20 years to modernize all thirteen schools in the district, that have been accomplished under my leadership. These accomplishments would have been impossible without such a talented administrative team, dedicated educators, a supportive Board of Trustees, and an engaged community, who always put our students first.

In my retirement, I plan to continue my advocacy for public education and mentoring of aspiring administrators. My retirement will be effective August 30, 2017.

The Board of Trustees has initiated a superintendent recruitment process and would like your input on your desired qualities for our district’s next superintendent. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese. We will also hold a community listening session on June 30, 2017, at 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm at the District Office to learn our community's desired qualities for the next BUSD Superintendent.

Honoring BUSD Retirees

At our June 6, 2017 Board Meeting, we honored this year's BUSD retirees. We are so thankful for the many years of commitment and service to our Berryessa students this group of retirees has provided to our district and community. We'd like to thank the two Boy Scouts from Troop 201 for leading our pledge of allegiance for this special meeting.

District Receives Outstanding Awards

BUSD had an exceptional night at the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) awards gala in May. Our district had the outstanding (and rare) recognition of receiving two leadership awards in the same district! It was an honor to receive the "Region 8 Superintendent of the Year" and Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Services Phuong Le was recognized as the "Business Office Administrator of the Year." BUSD educators and our School Board Trustees enjoyed an evening celebrating our district's accomplishments. Although it is a tough act to follow, we look forward to our summer to plan for an even better 2017-2018 school year!

Congratulations BUSD 8th Graders

On behalf of the BUSD Administration and Leadership teams, I would like to congratulate our 8th graders as they continue on their educational journey to high school. We’d like to thank these wonderful students for their hard work and commitment to their education. We wish you well in high school and sincerely hope that you will return to your roots of BUSD elementary and middle schools to share your knowledge and experience throughout your life.

2017-2018 Budget and LCAP

The District's 2017-2018 Local Accountability Plan and Budget were approved by the BUSD Board of Trustees at the June 20, 2017 board meeting. The public hearing on the 2017-2018 Budget and LCAP were held on June 6, 2017 and the Board received comments during the following two-week public comment period.

The LCAP is a roadmap that guides the District's strategic direction for programming and fiscal responsibilities. The LCAP defines all District priorities and is created in collaboration with our community through public LCAP meetings and a stakeholder survey.

The Budget will be reviewed and updated twice during the school year and the Board receives reports on these interim adjustments.

Commitment to Language Learners

Two of our instructional coaches received their Reading Recovery Certificates from St. Mary's College. Krista Castillou and Maricela Krickovic completed a year of training in working with students who need extra support in learning literacy skills so that they are proficient by the end of first grade. The training was strenuous - they went to class every Monday night for 3 hours, in addition to providing daily lessons for students. We are proud of their commitment to learning and willingness to work hard to help all students succeed.

Learn More About BEF

The Berryessa Education Foundation (BEF) is a volunteer-staffed foundation that has raised over $300,000 since 1992 to supplement the District’s budget to improve our students’ educational experience. This year's raffle raised about $31,000 for our students. All of the raffle proceeds directly benefit our students by providing grants for teacher’s ideas for innovative technology, curriculum, and classroom materials to enhance the student learning experience.

A big thank you to your our local community for their dedicated and generous support of Berryessa public schools!
