The Harvest Dinner: Oh, What a Night!
Nearly 100 guests were greeted with the sight of the Harvest Table ready to receive them and the bounty of food that would soon follow. Cheese and Cisco beer pairings started the evening followed by butternut squash soup, a charcuterie platter, several salads made with farm-fresh veggies, fried fluke, chicken, apple-blackberry crisp, and chocolate truffles.
Our field crew was recruited to serve the dinner.

This is an event we hope to have yearly, but in the meantime, our chefs and kitchen staff are very excited to begin planning the next series of events called
First Fridays at the Farm, beginning on October 1st. First Fridays will take place in the Hayloft once a month, with an intimate dinner created and served by our talented crew. Watch here for more details!

Is it Fall?
As I walk around the island this week, the weather still says summer, but my eyes tell me that fall is approaching. The tips of my swamp maple are turning red, the corn is all gone from the fields, and there are significantly fewer folks here. The pace of life has just slipped into a slightly lower gear, and the morning air has been punctuated by the sounds of Canada Goose hunters. The angle of the sun keeps more of my garden in the shade now, so I'm getting ready to harvest everything that's left. (Good thing I forgot to harvest before Earl arrived!)
The Island Fair organized by Maria Zodda is this weekend (Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 10-4) and that spells autumn. It sounds like there are some new events happening this year, so head on out to Tom Nevers for some family fun this weekend!
Each autumn we look forward to the arrival of apples from Carlson Orchards in Harvard, MA. The farm favorite is Honeycrisp. Sweet and tart, firm and flavorful, this apple is perfect to eat right out of your hand. Carlson's will shortly be making cider from this variety, and that is a treat too! Our dessert at the Harvest Dinner was made with Paula Red apples, also from Carlson's. We will continue to get Honeycrisp, Cortland, Ginger Gold, Gala, and Mcintosh apples until they are gone.
The flavor of their peaches takes me back to canning seasons of years past. They are picked ripe and they're perfect to eat when you buy them. I get a few every couple days and I don't have to wait for them to ripen. I'm told they are nearly gone for the season.
Fall Farm Talks Begin

Joann Burnham's last farm talk was so well attended, we asked her back for another! She will discuss and demonstrate Easy and Delicious Raw Recipes from the Abundant Harvest
including how to incorporate more vegetables in your diet by juicing them with a recipe for "red sky at night" and making a delicious lasagna with zuchini noodles, basil pesto, and Heirloom tomatoes.

Liliana Dougan is the self-proclaimed 'Pasta Goddess.'
From Sustainable Nantucket's website, in her words..."I have been making fresh pasta since I was a little girl, but I started making gluten free pasta in February 2010. I make gluten free fresh pasta, using three different gluten free flours and two different gluten substitutes, I only use organic flours and eggs. I can make a number of different pastas, from ravioli stuffed with scallops to squid ink spaghetti and pappardelle."
