Worship 8:30am & 10:45am
Education 9:30am
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Scripture:  1 Samuel 17:32-49

I've said it before and I'll say it again--VBS at Saint Andrew is like no other! Planning starts almost a year in advance, and attention is given to every detail. From the scenery and decor that is above-and-beyond; to the music and recreation and crafts; to the dozens of volunteers and the youth leaders; to the snacks, the science, and the stories... It all adds up to an exciting and magical week for our church kids, and I know that all of our leaders and teachers are giving them memories they will keep for a lifetime.

The part of the morning when the kids hear the Bible story for the day is actually pretty short, all things considered. It lasts about 10 minutes. But the story is brought to life for them in a way that makes it memorable; kids and older youth helpers act out the story with costumes and scenery. It's always just silly enough to keep them engaged, but also meaningful enough to teach them something.

Can you remember learning Bible stories as a kid? What made those stories stick?

Our scripture for Sunday is not one of the stories the kids have learned in VBS this week, but it's one that I bet you heard as a kid... David and Goliath. Honestly, in my 15+ years of ministry, I don't know that I've ever preached this text from 1 Samuel. But it came up on the lectionary for this week and I figured, what the heck. In our worship series about legacy and lasting impressions, this story can get us thinking about what makes some lessons stick, while others fall flat.

Not to mention, the story about David slaying the giant is a great reminder that little people have big gifts--and big faith. Those of us who are knee-deep in the river of Vacation Bible School will concur. And speaking of those big gifts-- you don't want to miss Sunday because the kids are going to sing some of their favorite VBS songs for us! See you then.

Peace,
Erin
