Back to School

Summer is definitely a time for rest and rejuvenation, however, for educators it is when we go to school. Administrators and teachers use the summer to focus on curriculum planning and professional development. This summer, we attended conferences, lectures, and read piles of education-focused books and articles to learn the latest in our field to enhance our teaching strategies. In addition to individual professional development, this summer all teachers will receive an additional two days dedicated to professional development before the start of school. We are looking forward to next week's two-day professional development workshops as an opportunity for teacher/staff collaboration, team-building, and support for what will be a fantastic new school year.

Each year during the summer, the district also holds a Leadership Retreat for management from all departments where we focus on one strategic aspect of leadership and  management challenges. Last year's theme was "Change Management" based on educational consultant Michael Fullan's book, "Leading in a Culture of Change." This year's retreat continued to work with Fullan's book and focused on one chapter covering "accountability" as the retreat theme. District leadership held in-depth discussions and activities to cultivate skills to be effective, accountable, and positive leaders within the scope of the people they serve.

We hope all of our families enjoyed their summer break and are excited for a successful and productive 2016-17 school year.

New Logo

We are proud to kick off the 2016-17 school year with our new Berryessa Union School District logo. During the June 21, 2016 Board meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the new Berryessa Union School District logo to better represent our district values and community.

Our new logo's star shape represents achievement while portraying interconnecting people to create the star. At BUSD, we view each student as an individual who is part of a globally connected environment. Students must be able to solve problems both individually and collaboratively. We believe that the "Pathway to the Future," is one in which people from diverse backgrounds come together to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.

Find a Local Summer Meal Program

Nutritious free meals are available for children and teens 18 years and younger at many locations throughout the Bay Area during the summer. Click this link to find a site near you.

Summertime is a time to play hard, but it is also a time to remember to eat right. Make sure good nutrition remains a priority all summer long and students will return to school in the fall healthy, sharp, and ready to learn.

Lunch prices for the 2016-17 school year:
  •        Lunch $3.00
  •        Reduced price lunch $0.40
  •        Brunch (at Middle Schools) $2.00
  •        Reduced price brunch $0.30

Please note there is a slight increase from last year's lunch prices as the result of increased food, packaging, and operating costs. The district's nutrition program strives to provide healthy and tasty meals while keeping costs low for BUSD families. This is the first lunch price increase since the 2012-13 school year.

Free and Reduced Price Meals Application
If you think your child may qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, you will need to complete an application for free and reduced-price meals for the 2016-2017 school year. Each household should have received an application packet in the mail. If you did not receive one, you may obtain an application at the District Office, your school office, or online. You may turn in your completed application to the Child Nutrition Services department at the District Office for the quickest processing.

Nutritional Services Account Balance
If you would like to know what your child’s account balance is, you can check it online at MySchoolBucks. If you have not set up an online account yet, you may do so at no charge. You will also have the option of making a payment online for a flat fee of $1.95. Otherwise, you may turn in a check or cash to your school.

Parents will soon receive student assessment results and a parent/guardian letter from BUSD's Educational Services in the postal mail. Please check your mailbox in the following weeks and read this important parent letter on how to interpret your child's assessment results.

Save The Date
BUSD Educational Services has scheduled a parent/guardian meeting to provide our families with additional information about the assessment results and helpful tips to assist you with your child's academic success.

Ed Services Board Presentation

In the month of August teachers and staff are preparing for an outstanding school year. For the first time, teachers have two days of professional development on August 16th and 17th before the start of the school year. Several sessions focus on new materials such as writing units of study, reading assessments, FOSS (Full Option Science System) units, and thematic language development units. In other sessions, teachers collaborate together to improve lessons in math, music, art, or PE. It’s an exciting experience that provides teachers with the space and time to envision successful learning experiences and anticipate seeing students on the first day of school.

Throughout the school year, the Education Services Department will support teachers and principals through professional development and collaborative leadership teams. Curriculum leadership teams will focus on exploring new English Language Arts and English Language Development materials, improving math assessments, and resources that align with new math curriculum, and deepening our understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards. While accomplishing these tasks, teachers and principals will review assessment data to determine areas of strength and areas where improvement is recommended.

Our department will offer parent workshops throughout the year, to share information about improvements to teaching and learning in Berryessa. These sessions will also help parents understand how they can support their children in learning. Our first parent workshop will focus on understanding CAASPP results will be held on September 14, 2016 from 6-7 pm in the District Office Board Room.

2016-2017 Local Control Accountability Plan and Budget

During the June 21, 2016, School Board meeting, the Board of Trustees approved both the Local Control Accountability (LCAP) and operating budget for the 2016-17 school year. The LCAP sets the priorities for how district resources are allocated to meet the needs of all Berryessa students. The LCAP was created with input from our business community, parents, teachers, administrators, trustees, and bargaining units. The budget aligns resources to meet the LCAP priorities.

Energy Conservation - Solar Project

As part of the district's energy conservation project, solar panels are being installed across all school sites, except the District Office. To date, solar panel installation is completed at Cherrywood, Morrill, Noble, Northwood, Sierramont, Summerdale, and Vinci Park. The remaining six school sites are slated for completion by August 18th. PGE will start installing the electrical connections to the solar panels during August 2016 with completion slated for October 2016.

*Please note that July's newsletter misspelled Laneview as Lakeview in mentioning solar projects.*

Modernization of Spaces

Modernization Projects

This summer's modernization projects are occurring at Sierramont, Noble, Northwood, Summerdale, and Vinci Park. Projects include updating and/or replacing classroom furniture, painting, floors, and creating Flexible Instruction Spaces. Vinci Park's Flexible Instructional Spaces will be constructed in 2017.

Most of the these projects are on schedule with a few items pending due to unforeseen construction/material delays. Details can be viewed in the Measure L Bond update Board presentation attached below.

Currently, the work areas remaining to be completed have heavy loads traffic usage, due to school construction projects. BUSD Technology Services' districtwide high-speed LAN cabling project (Stage 1) is on target to be completed by the end of December 2016. Unfortunately, there may be some potential delays in individual wings at Laneview. If this is the case, those wings may need to be completed during February and April 2017 holiday breaks. The district will inform our community of progress during board meetings and in this newsletter.

Measure L & Measure K Citizens' Oversight Committee Member Opportunities

Berryessa Union School District seeks volunteers to serve on the Bond Measure L and Parcel Tax Measure K Independent Citizens' Oversight Committees. Each committee meets quarterly at the BUSD District Office, at 1376 Piedmont Road, San Jose.

Each oversight committee ensures public funds are allocated in accordance with the original bond measure ballot terms. The committees evaluate the bond impact on students, classrooms, schools, and the district.

Measure L is a $77,000,000 general obligation bond measure, approved by voters in November 2014,  that authorizes funding for upgrades, repairs, and new construction projects for district schools and facilities.  Measure L CBOC members serve two-year terms. Please click here for member requirements.

Measure Ka parcel tax approved in 2012, allocated $1.3 million in funding for maintaining strong core academic programs, updated technology and science instruction, libraries, and attracting and retaining quality teachers through the extension of the Measure W parcel tax that expired in 2013. Measure K COC members serve a three-year term. Please click here for more information.

Summer Reading Lists

Learning can be lost when students do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Educators refer to this as the "summer slide." It is a fact that reading helps students maintain academic skills. Therefore, we encourage you to set a reading goal with your child of at least 20 minutes per day. Our local public libraries have many wonderful books to explore and offer a fun summer reading program. Click here to read the BUSD Library Services' Summer Flyer and to find the closest San Jose Public Library locations.
