Gift Bequest from Grace
The Southeastern Iowa Synod, ELCA has received a $70,000 gift from Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa, which is above and beyond their regular mission support. This gift represents a tithe from a portion of a bequest to Grace Lutheran Church that was received in January 2015 from the estate of Marvin Malmin.

Marvin Malmin was a long time treasurer of Grace Lutheran Church, devoted Lutheran, and advocate of planned giving. Along with family members, three non-profit organizations – including Grace Lutheran – were the recipients of gifts in the form of bequests. This final act of stewardship was one that was very important to Marvin. Read more...

Staff Transition
Minda Davison has served as Director for Communications for the Southeastern Iowa Synod since August 2013. Her work has led to a renewed web presence, a boost in our use of social media, a semi-annual newsletter and more. While serving as part of the ELCA communicators network she became more integrated into ELCA Hunger ministries.

Minda is engaged to marry the Rev. Dan Kuckuck in August 2015 and plans to relocate to the Des Moines area. She was recently hired by Two Rivers Marketing as a Public Relations Supervisor. Her last day on the staff of the Southeastern Iowa Synod will be April 15, 2015.

As she moves on, we give thanks for Minda's ministry on staff and look forward to her continuing partnership in the mission we share.

During this time of transition, Val Harlynn, who has been serving as Communications Assistant, will take on additional responsibilities and begin working full time. On matters related to synod communications, please contact Val at 319-338-1273 or harlynn@seiasynod.org

Have you taken the Mayo Clinic health assessment?
As of March 31, 45% of our eligible ELCA-Primary health plan members and spouses have taken the Mayo Clinic health assessment. We need 48 more people to take the assessment by April 30 to reach 65% and earn our 2% discount on ELCA health contributions this year. If we earn this discount it will mean $44,000 in savings that will come back into the Southeastern Iowa Synod.

If you have ELCA-Primary health benefits, take the health assessment today for yourself and for your congregation. You'll earn $150 wellness dollars and can begin using the results to make small improvements in your health.

Chaplains are source of spiritual care to patients, family and staff
In the Southeastern Iowa Synod eleven chaplains are serving under synod council call in community based hospitals, hospice homes, and retirement communities. These chaplains meet with patients, their families, and medical staff serving as a listening faith presence that is focused on meeting the emotional and spiritual needs of every person they encounter.

In the Quad Cities at Genesis Medical Center the spiritual care center is focused on comprehensive spiritual care.  The chaplains, pastoral care interns, residents and befriender volunteers serve four campuses as liaisons between patients and medical staff. At Genesis Medical Center the medical staff relies heavily on chaplains to help treat the whole person. Read the whole story...

World Malaria Sunday
World Malaria Day is observed internationally on April 25. Congregations are encouraged to celebrate Wold Malaria Sunday, April 26. Together, we have already raised over 90 percent of our goal. If we join together during this special time, we have the opportunity to reach the $15 million mark.

Our goal by the end of World Malaria Week is that we will have raised $1 million, enough to fully fund the rest of our country programs.

Find special World Malaria Day resources to help celebrate the day.

God's Work. Our Hands Sunday
It’s not too early to begin exploring opportunities for how your congregation will participate in “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. The date for this year’s dedicated day of service is Sunday, Sept. 13, when congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will once again have the opportunity to gather together and celebrate who we are as the ELCA – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

Mark your congregation’s calendar today. If it’s not possible for your congregation to participate on Sept. 13, please consider another day.

To guide your planning for 2015, visit www.ELCA.org/dayofservice. There are new resources to consider, such as a study guide designed for congregations to discuss what it means to serve with a joyful heart. You’ll also find the 2015 version of the toolkit and more. A new worship resource will be available later this spring. Watch the video below.
