A familiar face at the Museum of Art - DeLand, George S. Bolge is not the kind of collector who “collects for profit pure and simple, who buys works of art in wholesale lots, only to stash them away in a warehouse where they have risen in value.” Rather, our former CEO and (current Board of Trustees member) collects art for art’s sake, seeing each acquisition as “the record of a vivid experience, either a long pursuit or a struggle, in which mounting desire has conquered prudence and economy.”
We are thrilled to exhibit pieces from Bolge's remarkable personal collection for a limited time this January and February, which include iconic works in the areas of photography and print in particular. With few exceptions, most of the works in the stellar exhibition are small to medium in size, but cover an immense artistic scope in terms of cultural and aesthetic content, technique, media, and style. The pieces represented in this collection were assembled over 40 years of personal interactions with artists – those with both national and international reputations, and those whose talents have yet to be discovered. Familiar names include M.C. Escher, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Denis Smith, Arnold Newman, and more. This thoughtfully curated exhibition will be on view from January 15 - March 14, 2021 at our downtown gallery. From roadsides to over-passes, makeshift camps to alleyways, this photographic exhibition explores the subject of human dignity in the most unlikely places - articulating not just the dignity of the homeless, but of all of us, and our fundamental needs of belonging, love, respect, and kindness.
