Conversations With Our Call Committee

This Weekend: Share with the Call Committee your hopes for our congregation and our next Senior Pastor.

The process of calling a new pastor is an important and exciting time for us to talk about who we are and what we want to become as a congregation. We're grateful for the 100+ congregants who shared their thoughts about our congregation's personality, needs, and opportunities for growth in the recent survey administered by our Self-Study Task Force.

Now our Call Committee is  facilitating in-person conversations about our church's identity, needs, and future. These conversations will guide the Call Committee in the process of seeking out and selecting the candidate to present to the congregation as our potential new Senior Pastor. These conversations will also help all of us attain a broader, richer perspective of who we collectively are as the people of Advent Lutheran Church.

We invite you to join one or all of the the congregational conversations with our Call Committee at the following times:

  • This Saturday, May 14 at 3pm in the basement fellowship hall
  • This Sunday, May 15 at 10:10am in the basement fellowship hall
  • During the Congregational Retreat June 3-5 at Koinonia (Learn More)

If you have any questions or concerns about these upcoming Call Committee conversations, please email us. (We are so sorry this link was broken in last week's e-letter. It is fixed, and we'd love to hear from you.)

Meet Our New Staff Member

Zachary Stevens-Walter brings fresh talent and ideas to our administrative office and Sunday School program.

Zachary Stevens-Walter started training this week to become our next Office Administrator and Sunday School Coordinator. Zachary is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary. He most recently has been working at St. Lydia's, an innovative dinner-church ministry in Brooklyn, and beyond that he brings a diverse background of experience and skills in areas including music, chapel coordination, non-profit work, and more. We are so excited to have Zachary joining us in ministry. Let's all give Zachary a warm welcome as he transitions into our staff and community.

In this time of transition at the end of the school year, we are also saying goodbye to some members of our staff . Zachary is replacing Terris Krueger, our interim Office Administrator, who will be starting CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) in June and  his internship in September out on Long Island; and also Jessica Christy, our Sunday School Coordinator, who is deliberating her next step as she graduates from Union Theological Seminary. (Actually, both Jessica,Terry and Nancy were Zachary's classmates at Union and all give him very high recommendations.) We are are also saying goodbye to Vicar Nancy, who completes her internship and is graduating from Union Theological Seminary, and seminarian Paul Miller who will be starting an internship in New Jersey near his home.

On Sunday, May 22 we are celebrating their time and ministry with us at 10am with a joint end-of-year Sunday School party, and at 12pm with a coffee, cake and cards reception. We invite you to bring a card or drop one off in our office.

A Big Pentecost Sunday

This Sunday, May 15, we're confirming our whole Confirmation class, set to music from our pianist Deanna's jazz trio.

About a dozen junior high youth have been participating in our Confirmation program the past two years. They met for their final class on Saturday, and this Sunday at 11am worship we get to celebrate and honor them as they affirm their faith. We are so proud of all the questions, observations, and deliberations these students have brought to Confirmation class over the past two years, and it's been wonderful seeing them grow together. We look forward to seeing them affirm their faith and celebrate their confirmation this Sunday!

We are also excited to welcome the Deanna Witkowski Trio in our 9am & 11am worship this Sunday. Deanna's jazz trio will lead our congregational singing of her unique "jazz liturgy," including Deanna's original Evening Mass, which we will use throughout Pentecost. Deanna will also have copies of two of her recordings, Raindrop: Improvisations with Chopin, and From This Place available for purchase between services. A portion of each sale will go to the fund for our upcoming new piano. Click here to sample some of Deanna's liturgical jazz.

New Diaconal Ministers

Last Saturday, Ross Murray and Abby Ferjak were consecrated as Diaconal Ministers at a special service here at Advent. Check out Ross' reflection about being consecrated, and how "calling" is a funny thing, in a recent Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries e-letter.

Mission of the Month

Our "Mission of the Month" Envelope in May supports our Scholarship Fund.

In Sunday's "Mission Moment" in worship, Chandra Travis spoke about how our support made her daughter's first year at NYU possible. Please consider making a donation to our Scholarship Fund this month, so we can continue to help Sojourner and other students in our congregation obtain a great college education.

College students, applications for the next round of scholarships are now available at worship, in our office, in this e-letter, and on our website.
