Sermons and Pictures from every Sunday
Did you know you can listen to sermons and see pictures from every Sunday on our new website?!

Last Sunday Deacon Abby Ferjak preached about two wedding feasts: her own, and the one in Sunday's Gospel reading. We got pictures of our first intergenerational Sunday School of the school year, and our youth group started painting a mural in the Sunday School room. Check these out and more on our website! Explore >

New sermons, videos, and pictures from every Sunday will go up sometime Sunday evening or Monday, so you can relive, reflect, connect, and share!
Celebration Sunday: Help For Your Quilt Square
As we approach our big intergenerational quilt-making activity (literally big: we have 80 quilt squares ready), happening after every worship service on Celebration Sunday: Re-Formation, October 29 (only two Sundays away, people!), surely many of you are wondering: What am I going to put on my quilt square?!

We're asking you to respond to the question "What is God saying to the Church today?" on a 5x5 inch piece of cloth. Whether you are in kindergarten, high school, or retirement, it's a deep question and a small piece of fabric.

On the other hand, even though we've already gotten 71 responses to this question on post-it notes the past few weeks in worship, perhaps some find all that white space on a quilt square intimidating. Here are a few tips to help:

  • Take time to reflect more on this over the next two weeks: What is God saying to the church today?
  • Have fun with it. Fill it with color. Use your favorite colors. Write in a funky font. Bring some extra markers, decorations, or supplies you like. Make it yours.
  • Your answer doesn't have to be the whole answer. Your own perspective is the greatest gift you can add to our exploration of this question as a community.
  • Respond in community. God invites us into the big questions, and exploring questions together invites us into community. That's what this Celebration Sunday is about. So let's help each other, talk with each other, embrace our mistakes, and laugh with each other as we do this together. Every person's individual response matters. But we will learn the most from the sum of our responses and the process of sharing them.

Join us Sunday, October 29 for special, music-filled worship services celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation at 9am,11am, and 12:45pm (Spanish), and for our intergenerational quilt-making activity downstairs after each worship service.
Can YOU help make this Celebration Sunday awesome?
We have 3 easy opportunities to help make the day special for everyone!

Like food? Let's make our community time a real Lutheran potluck with foods representing the diverse people of Advent, and foods from around the world. Bring a dish or drink you love, to share after worship.

Speak a language other than English? We'd love to have you read in worship!
Our New Sister Congregation
You've probably heard about our sister church, Pueblo de Dios, in Calderitas, El Salvador. But you might not know we've been building a relationship with the Lutheran Church in Tanzania for over seven years.

After all that time, we have just finally been partnered with a sister congregation in Tanzania. The name of our sister congregation is Kanisa ki Lutheri ki Nyabugera. We are very excited to live into our new relationship with them! A trip to Tanzania is in the works for 2019, so stay tuned.
New Art Exhibit is up in our Sanctuary
Join us for a reception with the artist here at Advent at 7pm next Tuesday, October 24.

Abuelas: Portraits of the Invisible Grandmothers, a photography collection by Cinthya Santos Briones, focuses on undocumented Mexican immigrant women who came to New York decades ago in search of opportunity for their families. Over time they have built lives here and have become the elders of their community: the abuelas.

The collection will but up in our sanctuary from October 15 through November 6.  Read more >
A Friend of Advent
Lorraine Montenegro, the eldest niece of a longtime member of our congregation, Elba Cabrera, died in Puerto Rico due to complications following Hurricane Maria. Before that, she helped found a social services agency that today lives on in the Bronx. The New York Times recently published an article about her life and passing. Read it here >
