House Manager Needed


Job Description:  The House Manager is responsible for the smooth operation of the house during the run of the show. House managers coordinate and communicate with the Board of Director, Artistic or Managing Director, show director and/or stage manager, Marketing Team contact, and box office/concession volunteers to ensure patrons feel welcome and safe; leaving the theater with a positive experience.  


Job Responsibilities:

Coordinate, recruit, and work closely with box office volunteers. Train box office volunteers and keep them updated as to changes in theater box office policy. Plan and distribute a timely box office volunteer schedule. Provide them with all patron and comp lists for each night of a show’s run. Coordinate the preparation of cash box and credit card machines. On high volume nights, the house manager works with the box office volunteer to make sure theater seating runs smoothly.  Instruct box office volunteers in proper operation of the chair lift.

 

Coordinate, recruit, and work closely with concession volunteers.  Train concession volunteers and keep them updated as to changes in theater concession policy.  Plan and distribute a timely concession volunteer schedule. Ensure the proper setup before the house opens and provide needed end of evening clean-up information. Responsible for keeping up-to-date inventories of concession items; making sure there is enough to cover all shows in a performance run.  Communicate with concession vendors before and during the run of each show.  

 

Coordinate with stage manager and/or director of each show. Determine procedures for house opening, prepare pre show announcements, coordinate seating arrangements that ensures the safety of patrons, communicate emergency procedures; particularly where escape routes are located, share required tasks for closing the house after all patrons have left, coordinate the intermission drawing, and determine any patron notices relevant to a particular show. 

 

Prepare or coordinate the preparation of the “house” space. Ensure that all areas of the house are clean and presentable for patrons before opening night and throughout the run of a show. Make sure there are enough paper products, cleaning supplies, and garbage liners for the run of show.  If there are required patron notice signs, such as gun shots, strong language, or fog machines, make sure those signs are prepared and in place.  Report any chair lift problems to designated contact.

 

Coordinate program printing with Marketing Team and make sure there are enough programs for each weekends’ run.  Keep Marketing Team contact updated on print cartridge and printing paper needs. Print and prepare enough “green drawing tickets” for the run of the show.

 

Communicate, when needed, with Season Ticket holders.  Mail out season tickets and keep track of each season ticket holders contact information.  Before the run of high-volume productions, such as Christmas Carol and our annual musical, set up a process that ensures season ticket holders are seated for the shows they will be attending.

Audition Notice for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

 

Valley Center Stage is holding auditions for the June 2020 production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. All parts are available. The competition is on, and six mid-pubescents (played by teens or adults) are desperately vying for the title of spelling bee champion and all the grandeur that goes with it. 

Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk awards for Best Book, this show has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor.

Taylor Davis is on deck to direct another musical for VCS! Taylor directed the very successful VCS production of Nunsense in February 2019 and has performed in, directed, and choreographed various shows in companies throughout the Seattle area including Seattle Musical Theatre, GreenStage and SecondStory Repertory. 

 

Audition/Interview Location:

Auditions will be held at Valley Center Stage in North Bend on Friday March 27th 7 - 9 pm,  Saturday March 28th 2 - 5 pm and Saturday April 4th 1 - 4 pm. Valley Center Stage is located at 119 W North Bend Way in North Bend, above the bicycle shop.

 

Audition Requirements:

Please bring a headshot and resume. We are not requesting prepared pieces for this audition but will be having people sing and read sides from the show. Although this is a cold-read and cold-sing audition, an understanding of the characters and having reviewed the music is greatly preferred.  Please email auditions@valleycenterstage.org to let us know when you would like to audition.

 

Advice from the director for auditioning for this show, ”Knowledge of the music, show and characters are a huge advantage. Also, make big choices!”  


Other details:

Rehearsals will be held in North Bend. First read through will be April 14th (with music that evening). Possible rehearsals are Monday - Thursday evening, Saturday and Sunday (depending on actor conflicts). Character Breakdown:

All roles open. Open to gender blind casting. Open to various age ranges for all characters.  Seeking performers who are quick on their feet and can adapt to improv-style environments. Also looking for strong musicians.

 

Chip Tolentino - An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment. Strong movement ability a plus. (Also plays Jesus.) Seeking actors of all ethnicities for this role. Tenor C4 – B5 
 
Logainne Schwartzandgrunenierre (Schwartzy) - Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year. Strong movement ability a plus. Seeking actors of all ethnicities to play this role. Alto/belter. A3 – F5 
 
Leaf Coneybear - The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of former hippies. He has severe Attention Deficit Disorder and spells words correctly while in a trance. Strong movement ability a plus. (Also plays Carl's Dad.) Seeking actors of all ethnicities for this role. Tenor. A3 - A5  
 
William Barfee - A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush on Olive. Strong movement ability a plus. Seeking actors of all ethnicities for this role.  Baritone. E4 - B5  
 
Marcy Park - A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed ninth in last year's nationals. She speaks six languages, is a member of all-American hockey, a championship rugby player, plays Chopin and Mozart on multiple instruments, sleeps only three hours a night, hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is getting very tired of always winning. She is the poster child for the Overachieving Asian, and attends a Catholic school called "Our Lady of Intermittent Sorrows." She is also not allowed to cry. Soprano/belter.  Ability to play the piano is a strong plus. Strong movement ability a plus. Seeking an ASIAN actor for this role. C4 - E5  
 
Olive Ostrovsky - A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms. Strong movement ability a plus. Seeking actors of all ethnicities for this role. Soprano/high mixed belt to an F.  B3 - F5  
 
Rona Lisa Peretti - The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. Role requires excellent improvisational skills. Strong movement ability is a plus. (Also plays Olive’s Mom.) Seeking actors of all ethnicities for this role. Soprano, with a very strong mix. B3 - F5  
 
Douglas Panch - The Vice Principal. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years' absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an "incident" at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be in "a better place" now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona Lisa Peretti, but she does not return his affections. Baritone. (minimal singing). Role requires excellent improvisational skills. Strong movement ability a plus. Seeking actors of all ethnicities for this role. 
 
Mitch Mahoney - The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort, but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the kids feel better. Strong movement ability a plus. (Also plays Dan Dad and Olive’s Dad.) Seeking actors of all ethnicities for this role. Baritenor who can riff well.  E4 - A5  
 
Carl Dad - Schwarzy's main trainer, the more intense and competitive of Schwarzy's fathers. Normally played by the actor playing Leaf. G3 - D5  
 
Dan Dad - The more laid back and ineffectual of Schwarzy's fathers. Normally played by the actor playing Mitch. G3 - D5  
 
Jesus Christ - Deity invoked by a speller in need. Normally played by the actor playing Chip.  
 
Leaf's Mom, Dad, And Siblings - All more academically gifted than Leaf, they are even more surprised than he is by his success. Normally played by the spellers and audience volunteers as indicated in the script.  
 
Olive's Dad - A fantasy version of Olive's dad coming to the bee from work. Normally played by the actor playing Mitch. E4 - B5  
 
Olive's Mom - A fantasy version of Olive's mom at her Ashram in India. Normally played by the actor playing Rona. D4 - E5
