A Week to Celebrate...Cheese?

Cheese Fondue Day was Tuesday, 4.10! Cheese fondue originated in Switzerland at the beginning of the 19th century. Based on the simple ingredients (melted cheese and whatever leftovers you want to use for dipping) historians believe that fondue began as a peasant meal.
A cheese fondue usually includes a blend of different cheeses like Gruyere, Emmental, Raclette, and cheddar. You can also add ingredients such as milk, spices, cream, wine, or brandy for additional flavor and to thicken the mixture.
To celebrate National Cheese Fondue Day, invite some friends over for a fondue potluck. Ask everyone to bring dippers like bread, steamed vegetables, cured meats, and fresh fruit. Bon appétit!

National Grilled Cheese Day!

National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day is observed annually on April 12th!
According to food historians, cooked bread and cheese is an ancient food, enjoyed across the world in many cultures.  The United States' modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became easily available.
Originally it was made as an open-faced sandwich.
United States government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II.

Look out for Chef Neil's awesome grilled cheese creation tomorrow for the Lunch Special!

Bartlett's 175th Anniversary Presents-
Who's Your Farmer? Get to know our staff!

David Winking
Produce Supervisor,
'Sconset Farm Truck Operator

David started with the farm in Summer 2013, after previously spending summers in the other zip code, 02564, caddying in 'Sconset.  David was referred to Bartlett's by his sister Andrea, and after arriving, he discovered a whole other part of the island he had not realized existed!
David's first impressions of the island at age 13, working at the caddy camp was that Nantucket is, “a very quiet place, and I appreciate that about the island.”
From the start of David's employment, he has been a member of the Market department and after working in cooler and freezer positions, he has settled into his role of Produce Supervisor.  David looks forward to the hustle and bustle of the summer and having the opportunity to work directly with farm grown produce as it arrives at the farm stand. He enjoys all aspects of working with produce, from the field crew arriving on site with the picks of the day, to our Vegetable Production Manager, Andrew detailing how to best handle the delicate vegetables. He especially enjoys creating optimal displays to make the produce really pop and draw customer in. David has come to observe that the community at Bartlett’s is very close and there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people from all walks of life.
In his free time, he can be found at the beach, golfing,  (when the budget allows,) enjoying 'Mom’s" breakfast with friends at the Nantucket Inn,  or running along Nantucket's scenic bike paths and roads, breaking new personal records. Be sure to say hi to David this summer as he embarks on a new role operating the Produce Truck in 'Sconset!
