Director's Spotlight On. . . Appreciation

by: Stacy Emory

Several years ago staff began the practice of starting each of our meetings with appreciations. This is an informal time for people to express their thanks or appreciate other staff members for something that they have done. This simple practice continues to build trust and collegiality among staff members.

Appreciations are a regular part of classroom birthday celebrations and classroom meetings. Educators know that providing time for learners to speak positively to and about their peers is an important part of building a strong classroom community.

We continue to find ways to mirror this practice of appreciation within our parent and volunteer community. Think about all of the hours of volunteer time spent planning and working events, assisting in classrooms, managing and teaching seminars, organizing and driving on field trips, leading the PRT and working as room representatives, writing and editing the newsletter, and serving on our BOD and other teams and working groups. Amazing, right?

I encourage us all, when we return in the New Year, to make it a practice to notice and appreciate contributions being made in all the different areas of CLC.

There is no one right way to do this. Here are some suggestions:

  • Every issue of our newsletter has Volunteer Appreciations included as a regular feature. Anyone can submit an appreciation to be included in the weekly newsletter by sending it to: newsletter@scclc.net.
  • You could send an appreciation to a BOD member for them to note during the Community Recognition section of their agenda.
  • Consider a quick shout-out on your class email list. A face-to-face appreciation would also be welcome.

However you communicate your appreciation, know that these small acts of gratitude help stitch us together to create the whole cloth that is our community.  I witness these acts every day and am so grateful that you all are part of CLC. Happy Holidays!

Take Apart Contribution Drive

Irene Bond and Nick Tanouye

It's time for another Take Apart Contribution Drive!!

Please take a look at the lists below to see if you can help us out.

ITEMS WE LOVE:

  • Keyboards
  • Computer CPU towers *
  • Sewing Machines *
  • VCR's
  • DVD Players
  • Laptops
  • Printers (without the ink cartridges)
  • HiFi or Audio Gear
  • Any small appliance which has a myriad of screws and an absence of sharp internal components
    * These are the Russian nesting dolls of Take Apart that just keep giving.

ITEMS WE CANNOT TAKE (for safety or practicality reasons):

  • Garbage disposals (unsanitary and dangerous)
  • Computer monitors (both CRT and LCD)
  • Vacuum Cleaners (rarely clean inside)
  • Small electronics i.e. remotes, cameras (These items have either no visible fasteners or very tiny proprietary ones.)
  • Children's games and toys (Usually void of easy access and contain very little inside)

In general, examine the item and check for screw access. Determine whether it would be interesting and challenging for a kinder or 1st grader to disassemble and explore its secrets.

Thank you for all of your contributions and assistance in continuing to make Take Apart a favorite amongst our youngest learners! Items can be left outside Room 8. Please contact  Nick Tanouye (graduate dad and Take Apart maestro) or Irene Bond with any questions.

Appreciations

  • The second grade team would like to appreciate Shira Ross for gathering supplies for our class art project.

  • A special thank you to Paige Abramson Hirsch for leading a wonderful Hanukkah celebration, and the volunteers who supported her, including Deena Bertolina for making goodie bags!

  • Room 26 is truly a wonderful community! Thank you Roberta Marks for supporting our substitute with an art project, Julia Andersson for 4 seamless sub days while I was out, Barbara Gardyn for helping organize and clean up from an art project, Jen Berman for a large library book return, and Jessica Rosenberg for last minute in class support.

  • Many thanks to Lorea Martinez for helping Room 8 to celebrate International Children's Day with some great SEL activities.

  • A warm glow of gratitude is emanating from Educare in recognition of all the Charter Elves for their participation in the holiday toy drive and wrapping party.  It was heartwarming to see the care some of the learners took in the selection process, insistent on choosing for others their own personal favorites.
  • Charter families also get a standing ovation for the courtesy shown during the afternoon school run, yielding to KinderTime families the right of way in order for them to arrive at Educare in time for their staggered 2:35 PM pick-up time.
  • Educare is waving its “Number One Fan” foam finger to Just-Call-Out-His-Name Nick!
