Meet and Vote on our Senior Pastor Candidate
Dear Advent Members,

On behalf of the Call Committee and Council, I invite you to attend a Special Congregational Meeting called by the Advent Council on Sunday, February 26 for the single purpose of voting on our proposed candidate for Senior Pastor. The candidate being presented was unanimously approved by both the Call Committee and Council. The candidate will participate in each of the three services that Sunday; following each service, we will conduct a brief meeting where the candidate will speak and the membership will vote on the call. Votes will be sealed until after the final voting (12:45pm service), whereupon all ballots will be counted. As a reminder, our Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote of members present to call a pastor.

As is the custom, and because the candidate is currently in a call, we are unable to reveal any specifics about this individual until that weekend. That said, to help the membership get to know the candidate, there will be a reception in the Church's Sanctuary on Saturday, February 25 from 4pm to 6pm, with a question-and-answer period starting at 5pm. As there will be no time for questions following the services on Sunday, we strongly encourage you to attend this reception on Saturday.

Our vacancy has been a long one, and we thank you for your patience during the Call process. If the reaction of the Call Committee and the Council is any indication, however, I'm confident that once you meet the candidate, you will agree that it was well worth the wait.

Please come February 25th and February 26th and be part of shaping our future.

In the love and peace of Jesus,

David Richards
Call Committee, Chair
Here We Stand (And Sing!)
Join us in commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by raising our voices at our Reformation Hymn Sing at 7pm on Wednesday, February 22 -- featuring hymns all by Martin Luther.

In addition to the music, our program will be detailed with history, context, and interesting facts about each hymn. Our selection of Luther’s hymns will focus on his understanding of the Apostle's Creed. Join us in singing and reflecting on Luther’s reformative understanding of God’s Word that laid the foundation for this wonderful faith community we are blessed with today.

We are inviting other congregations and friends to this special event, and we invite you to do so too! Click here to print a flyer to share.
Continue Learning About Luther
Our book study on “The Forgotton Luther: Reclaiming the Social-Economic Dimension of the Reformation” has wrapped up, but you can still join Pastor Sudbrock for a 4-week study on Luther's Small Catechism during our Adult Conversations on Sundays in February. Adult Conversation meets every Sunday at 10:10am in the basement fellowship hall. Due to the Special Congregational Meeting on Sunday, February 26, the 4th part of this study will move to Sunday, April 2.

Also, the Adventurous Adventonians will be hosting a viewing of Martin Luther, the definitive classic film about Luther's life, this Sunday, February 19 along with a hearty German-fare lunch after 11am worship. So essential was this film to Lutheran culture that many of you very likely watched it as part of your Confirmation class. Now you can see it again as an adult! This classic b&w film produced by Lutheran Film Associates is powerful and gripping. Nominated for two Academy Awards, this is a film you should see -- or see again. The film will start at approximately 12:45pm and runs 105 minutes.
Anticipating Lent
Ash Wednesday is less than month away on Wednesday, March 1. We'll have special worship services at 12pm and 7:30pm in English, and 6pm in Spanish. We invite you to worship with us and be marked with a cross of ashes.

Beginning Wednesday, March 8, our Wednesday Evening Worship services return for the Lenten Season at 7pm. A change from the Advent Season, these midweek worship services will begin at 7pm, and we’ll also have a Soup Supper before at 6pm in the basement fellowship hall. Join us each Wednesday for fellowship around warm soup, and a Taize-style worship service drawing us into meditation and reflection on our baptism identity. If you are willing to cook soup for one our suppers, sign up here.
Coffee House: West Side Voices
This Friday at 7pm come and hear artistic presentations of poems, stories, and music by members of Advent and the community. If you would like to present, or for more information, talk to Kirsten Sadler (freddylucy@nyc.rr.com).
The Chili Cook-Off: New Date
We’re bringing back our tradition of a Chili Cook-Off as a special coffee time after 11am worship. Due to our Special Congregational Meeting on Sunday, February 26, it has been rescheduled to Sunday, March 19. To enter your chili or help out, contact Maura Rosado at maurarosado@gmail.com. All are invited to enjoy a warm bowl (or, more likely, bowls) of chili, and fun fellowship.
Join Our Trivia Night Team
Do you have a passion for random facts and friendly competition?

We’re getting an Advent team together to participate in the second annual trivia night fundraiser supporting Lutheran Ministries in Higher Education in NYC, aptly titled: “Are You Smarter Than A College Student?” Join our team to face off against other churches and college students in a friendly battle of wits admist food, drink, and fellowship. The fundraiser is at 8pm Friday, March 24 downtown at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. Whatever your level of prowess at trivia, anyone interested in being part of our team is welcome to join! Talk to our team leader, Carolyn Riehl (carolyn.riehl@gmail.com), to learn more and get on board.
